The Place It has opened for a few months but it was only until recently that we managed to check out this hot table. Dancing Crab is another venture at the Grandstand by Tunglok Group, located just next to their sister restaurant, TungLok XiHe Peking Duck restaurant. We can totally feel the influence of the Louisiana seafood style lately in Singapore, as well as neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia. You would be amazed by how delightful the whole eating experience was for us, even if it meant getting our hands dirty.
The restaurant is quite big and can accommodate a huge crowd, but it was so popular that we had to reserve in advance and were given a specific seating timing. I was surprised by how lively the whole atmosphere was, which exuded a different vibe from the traditional seafood houses like Jumbo.
The Food Seafood is the way to go at Dancing Crab, especially the Dungeness crab and Sri Lankan crab, which was our main craving for the day. There are no utensils here at Dancing Crab, so the whole idea was to get our hands dirty (and oily), and simply have fun eating!
Before having the highlight of our meal, we started with the Crab Cakes ($13) was came in two big portions. It was quite well done on the texture and crab fillings, a great start to our meal!
We loved the Beer Batter Cajun Calamari ($9) as well. It was crispy and the golden colour texture was perfect.
One big disappointment for us was the Lobster Roll ($23), which came with pathetic lobster fillings. The lobster was nothing to shout about as it tasted quite normal. The bun and fries were the saving grace of the dish instead.
Now for the highlight of our dinner, the crab!
For a party of 2-3 people, we would recommend having the Combo Bag #1 ($80) which came with Sri Lankan crab, prawns, mussels, corn, potatoes and sausages. Do check with the staff on the weight of the crab for the day, we were told our crab was about 600g! We chose the Dancing Crab Signature sauce (spicy) for our combo bag, which was not that spicy for me. The seafood platter was enough for 2-3 people I would I say, assuming that there were other snacks to go along.
The seafood was generally quite fresh, even though the crab was really small for the price we were paying.
Worried that the crab portion was too small, we added to have another Sri Lankan crab ($5.80/100g), which we were told the minimum weight was 1kg. We chose the Herb Butter sauce for this crab, which was average in my opinion. I wished that the butter taste was much stronger and flavourful. The amount of sauce given was too little as well.
Rants The service standard was mixed. Some of the service crew was unaware of what was going on, while some showed us their unfriendly attitude. I would not use decent to describe the service here. The seafood combo bags are overpriced as well, given the small portions of every kind of seafood for the hefty price tag.
Will I return again? There were some hits and misses but it was still an overall fun eating experience. We are undecided if we prefer this over our version of chilli crab, so we would not mind returning to give it another chance. Palate Card holders can enjoy dining discount of up to 50% depending on the party size.
