Food Review: Mak’s Noodles Singapore at Centrepoint | Famed Hong Kong Wanton Noodles

The Place Tucked at the back of Centrepoint, the famed Hong Kong noodle bar opened their first outlet in Singapore this week. Walking into Mak’s Noodles restaurant will remind you of the other famous Hong Kong dim sum eatery that opened here 2 years back, with the green and white deco, coupled with their efficient use of space through the tightly arranged seatings.

Update: Their second outlet opens at Westgate, Jurong East!

The Food We just have to start with their popular Wonton Noodle Soup ($6.90). Mak’s Noodles Singapore imports their noodles and wonton (i.e. wanton) skin from Hong Kong, ensuring the same taste and consistency as the original shop. They have promised that their Singapore’s outpost will taste as close to their Hong Kong’s outlets as possible, 95% to be exact. For fans of Mak’s, you shall be the judge.

For me, the wanton was good; better than most wantons if I may add. The noodles was less impressive though, with the overly chewy texture and the overly salty soup, making its signature a slight disappointment for me. Having said that, I do know of folks who like their noodles being “QQ”; if you are, then this Wonton Noodle Soup may be appealing.

Their dry Tossed Noodle with Oyster Sauce ($6.80) was even more “springy”. But am glad to have enjoyed this together with the Beef Brisket ($14.70) and Seasonal Vegetable in Oyster Sauce ($4.90), which fared better than its signature noodles. The well flavoured beef and fresh vegetables are good compliments, you can get to enjoy these together with your noodles in a set – for example, the Tossed Noodle with Beef Tendon & Brisket ($10) and Wonton & Beef Brisket Noodle Soup ($9).

I tried the Wonton Soup ($6.90) as well. Excellent wantons, with salty broth. Definitely a very hearty soup to have on any given day, that’s if you like the saltiness.

Rants Expect Hong Kong service, if you know what I mean. And have I not ranted about the confusing layout of Centrepoint? To find Mak’s, you have to head down to B1 of the shopping mall before heading up to the Level 1 again, the restaurant is located at the far back of Centrepoint.

Will I Return Again? For fans of the original Mak’s Noodles in Hong Kong, “Mak” this down and make time for it. For fans of the Singapore local style Wanton Noodles, give this a try to get a sense of what our Hong Kong friends have been raving about for years. For me, I am glad I finally got to try this popular brand, as I always feel there are other food options in Hong Kong than just Wanton Noodle. Unfortunately, Mak’s Noodles did not come across as exceptional.
