The Place It has been awhile since we visited cafes in Singapore as we were down with “cafe-fatigue” in the past year after seeing many similar offerings, with no particular establishment that stood out or actually warrant a return visit. So here we are at the few days old Atlas Coffeehouse along Duke’s Road, hoping the new year brings along exciting things. Literally located right beside Crown Bakery at Bukit Timah Road, Atlas Coffeehouse is the sister cafe of Assembly Coffee (along Evans Road, which had closed already).

The first thing I noticed about Atlas Coffeehouse is its location in an old industrial warehouse lookalike building, with a largely minimalist interior made up of dark blue shades coupled with white marble tiles. We went straight for the counter seats overlooking Bukit Timah road, the perfect spot for some daydreaming and zoning out moments. Isn’t that what we all need on a weekend?

The Food I love concise menus here at Atlas, as I’m fairly skeptical of cafes/restaurants which attempts to serve the 1001 items off its menu. The menu here is split into Eats and Sweet Treats, so it is easy to focus on what you want. Kudos to the effort put in to the menu as it deviates from the usual stuff you can expect like Eggs something and expect items like the Salmon Soba Noodles ($17), Summer Chicken Stew ($17), Breakfast Strawberry Maple Pancake ($16) and Nutella Broiche French Toast ($15) – this list is not exhaustive of what Atlas offers though.

In the mood of trying something savoury and sweet, we settled for the Creamy Mushroom on Sourdough ($12) and the ATLAS Butterscotch Banana Pancake ($18).

The Creamy Mushroom on Sourdough packs all the ingredients I love on my brunch plate. White wine creamy mushrooms served on toasted sourdough and freshly grated Parmesan cheese, added with buttery Scrambled Eggs ($3 addition) by the side. The portion is huge for one person if you are also planning to order other stuff to share, so do budget your calories.

The surprise factor for me during my visit was the ATLAS Butterscotch Banana Pancake. Despite an expected waiting time of 20 minutes, I was very satisfied with the choice. The right kind of fluffy texture with crisp edges are just so hard to come by. Served with caramelized banana and home-made Butterscotch & Honey Comb ice-cream, look out for the crispy and sweet corn flakes on the pancakes as well. Totally addictive.

The coffee here uses beans from Two Degrees North Coffee Co.. We had the Cafe Latte ($4.50), which K doesn’t really like due to its overly bitter aftertaste.

We had no space for its Sweet Treats, but you can expect mainly buttermilk waffles of different flavours such as Salted Caramel ($12), Earl Grey Caramel ($12), Mixed Berries Compote ($12.50) and Candied Bacon ($14).

Rants The cafe was fairly packed when we visited, so it may or may not fit your definition of chill. If you are planning to drive, parking can potentially be a challenge around the private estate neighbourhood.

Will I Return Again? The food we tried were definitely above average for cafe fares, with relatively reasonable prices. I won’t mind returning to try the waffles the next round.
