The Place Gourmet Muah Chee in a local hawker centre? That is how we will describe Heavenly Snack (天下小吃), located in the old estate of Circuit Road. Also widely known as Mochi, we didn’t expect such a big frenzy for this long-time street snack which we were used to seeing at “Pasar Malams” or night markets, especially for a stall which was only opened about a year ago. The humble stall opens at 11.30am, but there was already a beeline when we arrived slightly before its opening time.
The Food When we visited, there was the white or black option. The White Muah Chee (S$2.50) and Black Muah Chee (S$2.80) are coated in brown sugar, then cut nicely into square pieces by the owner that even the fussiest OCD folks will approve. There is a limit of two orders per customer, as we believed that the owner hopes that as many customers as his hands can serve will get to taste his heavenly snack.
The highlight for us is not the Muah Chee, but the sheer visual treat of watching how he diced, sliced and tossed these glutinous rice. Get your cameras and videos ready.
We much preferred the black sesame muah chee to the plain white version, simply because I love black sesame and naturally, it is more flavourful. The other good thing is that the muah chee is not too sweet. To add on, the other surprise for us was the exquisite takeaway boxes, which could seriously rival that of a counter at a Japanese food basement.
Rants Be prepared to wait for at least fifteen minutes. Our advice is to come ten minutes before the opening hour.
Will I Return Again? We are sick of food fads like overly sweet dessert shakes or cutesy character food. The social media success of Heavenly Snack proves that there is a demand for good local snacks, as long as it is being revolutionised in some ways, just like how Heavenly Snack differentiates itself from the nondescript pasar malam stalls. The long queue may not be worthwhile in our opinion, but it is definitely worth a try once.
