Food Review: Song Kee Fishball Noodle at Tembeling Road, Katong | Best Herh Keow ever, reopens here from Upper Serangoon Road

The Place When Song Kee Fishball Noodle closed abruptly last year at its Upper Serangoon Road outlet, it took many by surprise. Indeed, we have to confess that we didn’t even have the chance to visit its previous outlet after hearing the rave reviews from friends. Finally, it has made a comeback this month, and has opened at 128 Tembeling Road in Katong just few days ago.

The space here is a coffeeshop setting, with most of the tables along the side alley. The ordering system may be slightly confusing if it is your first time here. The trick is to walk towards the end of the coffeeshop (near the toilet) and place your orders. You will then be given a queue number and the food will be served to your table.

Now the million dollar question – how long do you have to wait? We reached at 11am before the official opening time at 11.30am, were the fourth in queue and had our fishball noodles on our table at 12.10pm. That explains why some of the photos of the shop has its shutters still down!

The Food Fishball Noodles, what else? The price here starts from S$4 (small), S$6 (medium) and S$8 (large). We went straight for S$8 which was just sufficient for us. Okay, we got to admit that we were starving, and since we were prepared to wait for an hour at least, let’s just go BIG. The first bite I had was the noodles, where you can add extra vinegar as you wish. The noodle texture is springy, though I will recommend adding more vinegar.

Now on to the fishball, it had a nice bouncy texture but we found it quite plain in its flavour. Quite disappointing. We were told Song Kee serves up another type of fishball, which was unfortunately not available during our visit.

The best part of the bowl we had is undoubtedly the handmade ‘herh keow’. It was nothing like what we had before, more chewy and with a peppery aftertaste. Made with fish skin, the texture was smooth and soft, filled with minced pork which was oh-so-delish. Ask for extra servings of the ‘herh keow’, no regrets.

We also ordered additional bowl of soup (S$6 or S$10) with more fishballs, ‘herh keow’ and tau pok.

Rants Don’t bother if you are in a rush or expect to have your food quickly. The parking space is quite limited too, and do make sure to put enough parking coupons!

Will I Return Again? It is a good bowl of fishball noodle no doubt, though we can’t help feeling it is overhyped – perhaps built from the months awaiting for its reopening. The ‘herh keow’ here is very good and unlike any others we have had, but we are sure we have had better fishballs. We won’t mind having it again, but an hour of wait may be too much for us.

  1. Was lucky to have waited only about 20min, even when there was no queue and approx 60% full. It tasted like any normal fishball noodle. The ingredients are a little better in quality but nothing special. Have eaten many beeter ones around.
