The Place We always wonder what else is there in store for Keisuke Group, known for reinventing new Japanese concepts in Singapore. After the previous launch of Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke in Tanjong Pagar, the group’s 17th outlet is Omurice Keisuke located at Bugis+, serving comforting and value for money set. The restaurant is located at level four of the mall, which is linked by overhead bridge to Bugis Junction. It is not a big space, a 22 seater space with a row of counter seats and a couple of tables. The idea of Omurice originated from Kyushu more than 100 years ago, and it is essentially fried rice with ketchup wrapped over an omelette.
The Food The menu is straightforward, as you can go for the omurice, spaghetti or combo where you get a mix of two. Prices are very reasonable, starting from S$9.90 for either the omurice or pasta. I tried the Omurice Combo (S$12.90) regular size, which comes with a choose of spaghetti. The menu is highly customisable, so I get to choose the Mentaiko Spaghetti with Wafu Sauce. Other sauces like tomato and creamy white sauce are also available. Each set also comes with a choice of salad like potato salad or green salad.
In addition, there is the option to add Cheese Sauce (S$2), or other sides like the Fried Chicken Wing (S$2) or Deep Fried Prawn (S$3). I went for the additional cheese, which is being melted right at my table. You then get to pour the melted cheese over your rice or pasta yourself. I first tried the rice without the cheese, which is already pretty good on its own. The added cheese works for me, as I like it with the rice and eggs. The flavour of the cheese is not too rich and overpowering, a combination of three kinds of cheeses, mozzarella and two types of cheddar.
Another noteworthy mention is that the eggs come from Keisuke’s own locally-farmed eggs, which has quite a nice creamy and soft texture along with the rice.
As for the Mentaiko Spaghetti, the texture is done al dente, with a good balance of the mentaiko flavour. Overall, the regular combo portion is quite carb heavy, so I recommend having this size for regular eaters instead of the large portion.
Rants The restaurant’s space is quite small, which we would foresee a long waiting queue time during peak hours. As orders are prepared ala minute, it could take awhile for your order to be served. As with most Keisuke’s concepts, no reservations are taken.
Will I Return Again? Omurice Keisuke is a comforting and affordable option if you are around Bugis. For the price, the quality of the rice and other ingredients are good and it should be quite a popular spot in the mall, we say. Omurice Keisuke opens officially on 14 January 2019.
This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
