Food Review: Homeground Grill & Bar at Boon Keng | Casual Female-led Grilled Concept along Serangoon Road

The Place It is rare to find grilled concepts in heartland districts and Homeground Grill & Bar is one good addition. Located along Serangoon Road right beside 126 Dim Sum, the space at Homeground Grill is casual and it is approximately seven minutes walk from Boon Keng MRT Station. The restaurant is run by a group of female friends, who wants to create a casual spot for heartlanders to chill over food, and drinks in the evening.

The Food The menu is concise and split into four mains sections – Lights Bites, Sharing, Mains, Bar Grub. As I wasn’t too hungry, I only managed to try three dishes. I started with the Grilled Portobello Mushroom (S$7) with garlic butter, a must have for shrooms lover. This is topped with melted cheese, which makes the mushroom all the more delicious.

For mains, there is a good variety of meat options. I had the Charcoal Grilled Salmon (S$18), grilled to a nice pink hue. The texture of the Norwegian salmon was just right, where the fresh salmon is bathed in malt. It also comes with garlic chilli sauce, though I was happy to have the salmon without any.

The other dish I had was the Charcoal Grilled Whisky Ribeye (S$26), a 200g New Zealand ribeye marinated in whisky and fresh herbs. You can top up your mains with side dishes like truffle fries or onion rings (S$3). The ribeye I had was succulent, done medium-rare and it also comes with salad. That said, the whisky element was relatively faint for me, and I wouldn’t have noticed any, if not from the menu.

If you are have a bigger appetite or group, the Homeground Mixed Platter (S$72) is probably something good to share as it comes with a wide assortment of chicken, sausage, tiger prawns, beef and salmon, good to share for 2 to 3 people.

Rants It opens only at 1pm on the weekends, which is not really ideal for lunch gatherings.

Will I Return Again? Great to have a grill concept like Homeground in the heartland district, and a great spot for folks looking to chill the night with their close friends while enjoying competent food selections. Priced reasonably. A concept worth checking out if you are a fan of grills. We will return, that’s for sure.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
