Food Review: Shao At Frankel Avenue | Cosy Home-Style Teochew Restaurant In Kembangan

The Place Located at Frankel Avenue right beside Dutch Colony Coffee, Shao was recommended by one of our foodie friend and I have never really noticed its existence even though I visited Dutch Colony for coffee a couple of times previously. The simple looking Teochew-focused Chinese restaurant feels like home dining to some extent, made to look more like someone’s house than a restaurant.

The Food For a start, my group ordered the Salted Egg Yolk Yam (S$12) and Sotong Sausage (S$22). Salted egg dishes are a dime a dozen but a yam version is a first for me, and this dish is delicious with a nice fried yam texture in the luscious yellow sauce.

Conversely, the Sotong Sausage is novel yet it doesn’t speak much to me.

The Steamed Crab With Vermicelli (S$78) is another signature dish though quite pricey. I didn’t try much of the crab meat, but I like the vermicelli which soaks up the essence of the crab broth.

One of the dishes I enjoyed is the Sliced Fish Claypot ‘Pao Fan’ Porridge (S$48/large). I like Pao Fan, particularly the crispy texture of the grains mixed with the porridge. This dish is comforting with the fresh fish slices.

Other dishes I had were the Wok Fried HorFun (S$12) and the Gai Choy With Roast Pork Belly Claypot (S$38). The former is akin to a dry version of fried flat noodles, while the latter has the crispy pork belly soaked in a broth.

Rants The menu is suited for group dining and not that ideal for couples. Parking is also a challenge if you drive as legal parking lots are limited in the vicinity.

Will I Return Again? There are some hits and misses for me at Shao. The intimate space makes it a cosy dining venue, though I wouldn’t think it is worth going the extra travel mile for it.
