Food Review: Old World Bakuteh At Yishun | Delicious Fried Porridge Worth That Trip To Yishun

The Place Yishun is not my usual food territory so there must be a good reason when I decide to head north. I visited Old World Bakuteh in Hiap Hoe Eating House recently, located in Yishun Street 72. As the name suggests, Bak Kuk Teh is the specialty here but my aim was to try another dish upon recommendation from friends who stay in Yishun, the Fried Porridge!

The Food One of the signature dishes here at Old World is the Mixed Pig’s Organ Fried Porridge (S$5). It is not common to come across fried porridge in Singapore and this version is filled with wok-hei. The dark texture of the porridge is from the dark soy sauce, and it is a generous portion for the price.

The taste of the porridge, as I expected, is very flavourful and redefined my impression of porridge. It is topped with plenty of spring onions and fried shallots as well, which adds to the overall flavour.

If you are not a fan of innards, you can opt for sliced pork instead. The dish may say fried, but don’t expect a crispy texture of the porridge.

I also tried other dishes like the Pork Ribs Soup (S$6), You Tiao (S$1), Fried Mee Sua and Beancurd Skin.

I personally find that the Bak Kuk Teh is average, as the broth is not flavourful enough for me. It is also probably because I had the delicious fried porridge first, and hence my expectation for the pork ribs is high.

The standout side dish for me is definitely the Fried Mee Sua. It comes in a small bowl, and this is a dry version. The texture of the Mee Sua is just right, and most importantly, very tasty.

Rants Hits and misses here, though you won’t go wrong if you stick to the fried porridge.

Will I Return Again? Without a doubt, yes. I will head to Yishun just for the fried porridge. And if you still have space, I also like Ah Tan Wings located at Yishun Park Hawker Centre.
