The Place A new wine bar concept which opened at 87 Club Street, I checked out the one week old Club Street Wine Room, a gorgeous long shophouse restaurant which a huge skylight in the middle over the bar. It is a charming space decked in contemporary finishes with ample natural light over most of the dining space in the day. The concept is by chef Andrew Walsh, who is also behind the newly minted One-Michelin starred Cure, Butcher Boy as well as Catfish.
I like how spacious the space is, which makes the dining ambience very comfortable. It is a 45-seater space, and there is various seating arrangement for different party sizes.
The Food Most wine bars main focus is on the wine list, but what Club Street Wine Room attempts is to provide a robust food menu as well. I visited on a weekend lunch to check out the space in the day, and the menu also includes the weekend roast & toast section other than its all day a la carte menu.
Starting off with a light wine during noon because wine not? I had a glass of the Koerner Riesling (S$20), light in taste and easy to drink, good for a weekend start.
From the weekend menu, I had the Truffle Cheese Toastie & Smashed Avocado (S$22) where you can choose your style of eggs. No regrets for choosing the scrambled, as the dish comes in a few pieces of crispy toast sandwiched with scrambled eggs, cheese and avo.
The texture of the toast is really good, soft yet crispy, and that combination of ingredients within is perfect. It is not too cheesy, and I really enjoy it.
From the all day a la carte menu, I tried the Woodfired Scallop & Prawn Vol Au Vent Thermidor (S$14/piece). It is a luxe puff pastry which showcases finesse in the presentation. The flavour is not too rich, though it looks creamy. I actually think this is a suitable dish for an indulgent afternoon tea.
The Beef Tartare & Scallop Toast (S$16/2 pieces) is another interesting dish which is has a surprise element by the side, eggs! The way to enjoy the dish is to dip the toast into the eggs, which adds an elevated dimension to the dish.
I also tried the AFC Andy’s Fried Chicken (S$6/piece), a tender and juicy dish which makes for an ideal bar snack.
For dessert, I had the Tart of the Week (S$12) which happened to be a dark chocolate tart served with vanilla cream.
Rants A little patchy on the service where staff A’s service is much colder than staff B. In addition, when I arrived at the restaurant, there wasn’t any staff at the entrance and it took awhile before they noticed, even though the restaurant was relatively empty.
Will I Return Again? The food impresses me at Club Street Wine Room, as it is easy for a wine bar concept to overlook on its food quality. Lovely shophouse space, and I am keen to return for dinner next time as the ambience should be quite charming in the evening. I am eying that Aged T-bone 500g beef next.
