Food Review: Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse At Club Street | Micro-brewery And Restaurant In A Restored Heritage Building

The Place With a 500 litre microbrewery, and a 120-seater restaurant, Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse is perhaps one of the places to go for craft beer in Singapore. Located at Club Street, along a slip road, you will be surprised that there is a restaurant in this corner and just how huge the space is.

Done with much sophistication, the interior design of the restaurant hits the right notes with the brown leather counter seats and rattan chairs. Spacious dining areas, giving groups their own private space to drink and merry.

The Food The pandemic may deter big group dining, though the food at Thirty Six is perfect for smaller groups. Focusing on grilled food done over open flame, the restaurant does not just serve up the usual bar snacks. Thirty Six’s kitchen put in much thoughts to create the perfect food to pair with their craft beers. Yes, they brew their own beer in-house and boasts 23 taps (and counting).

Starting with Crispy Popcorn Chicken (S$9), not your usual though since the meats are marinated in cider overnight! Definitely a bar snack, and a good starter to kick start the meal here with a craft beer in hand.

The Scotch Egg (S$10) is perhaps more for the grams frankly. Well-executed as a scotch egg should be, though make sure you dip into the sriracha sauce which elevates the dish well.

Skewers and beers seem to be a popular combination for most cultures, from ‘chuan chuan’ 串串 to kebabs, and of course our local satay. Thirty Six makes sure you get to enjoy some of these here too. Tried both the Grilled Black Tiger Prawns (S$20) and Spicy Pork Belly Satay (S$16), and I strongly recommend the latter.

Rarely you get satay done with pork belly, and I wonder why! The fats of the meats make the meat more flavourful and juicy, with the overnight marination using sambal and chilli padi giving the satay a satisfying oomph.

The highly recommended Sticky BBQ Pork Ribs (S$28 for half-rack) does not disappoint. Cooked twice, first sous vide and then grilled, the ribs are tender and well-seasoned. Order this to share, or savour it on your own.

Continuing a rather porky dinner, I tried the Pork Chop (S$36 for 300g) here as well. Also grilled over an open flame, though the meats were a tad dry for me here. The highlight here is pork crackling! Go generous with the sauce, and you are in for a crackling good time!

Recommend the Charred Romaine Lettuce (S$9) as a side for the mains. Charred over an open flame, the cherry tomato and San Marzano tomato vinaigrette complements the greens well. And whilst it is actually a mains, the Wood-fired Cauliflower (S$25) is another vegetable dish I do recommend to balance the meal out.

To end the meal, the Burnt Cheesecake (S$13) is actually Pandan flavour! Though Chocolate Brownie (S$12) ticks the box for me too, with the salted caramel gelato a perfect ending to the meal here.

Didn’t talk much about the craft beers here since I am not a big beer drinker to start. Although managed to sip a couple of beer selections during our meal, truly a spot for beer drinkers to enjoy a wide range of brews and perhaps find one that they fancy!

Rants This short slip road leading out to South Bridge Road is not the most obvious to most. But once you discover the charm of this lane, grab a drink, sit by the curb side and sip your beer!

Will I Return Again? Love a smokehouse, something that’s lacking in Singapore. Wouldn’t mind if Thirty Six goes full swing into a food menu of that of a smokehouse, minus the beer bites. And if you are a beer lover, Thirty Six is calling out to you. Not forgetting the interior decor of the restaurant, very classy!

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
