The Place There are many new restaurants and cafes opening in Joo Chiat in 2021, and Asador has been on my radar especially after I visited their sister restaurant Next Door Spanish Cafe along East Coast Road. Asador is also a Spanish restaurant and specialises in grilled dishes, and I find that it injects a new lease of life to the Joo Chiat precinct.
The space is semi-casual, and exudes a neighbourhood vibe, though it is more formal that Next Door Spanish Cafe in terms of the dining setting and prices.
The Food The menu is mainly split into starters, seafood, meat and dessert and it does evolve periodically.
For a start, I had the Tartar (S$28) which is dry-aged beef tartare with smoked bone marrow. Served with a few slices of crispy bread, this is a rich rendition of beef tartare especially as it is topped with sinful bone marrow butter. Good to share, as it can be too rich for one person.
A hot starter which is hard to go wrong is the Huevos Rotos (S$16) where you get hand cut frites with chorizo & runny egg. The potatoes are lovely, thick and chunky which absorbs and scoops up the egg yolk well. The portion is quite generous too, good to share for 2-3 persons.
For meats, I had the Costillar de Ternera (S$56), glazed Angus beef short ribs. Soft tender beef meat here, with a nice dark and flavourful glaze over the beef. The taste is not particularly differently from others I have had before, so I recommend going for the other sharing meats if you have more people to share it out. This dish is good to share for two.
Rants Quite a couple of dishes under the meats section are designed for 3-4 persons, such as the dry aged beef. It is a concept which I feel is more suitable for small groups, rather than couples.
Will I Return Again? A chic addition to Joo Chiat, Asador is like this indie Spanish restaurant which I will be inclined to step in again as I am keen to try the rest of its meats and seafood.
