Food Review: Habitat Coffee
The Place Upper Thomson Road is a food haven but never did I know that there is a cafe located strategically in the area. With some impromptu decision, I dropped by Habitat Coffee one Sunday afternoon after reading some online reviews on the cafe.
I was very surprised that the cafe was packed during brunch time as Habitat Coffee has been around in the cafe scene for some time.
The cafe is nicely segmented into two main sections, with more privacy at the upper deck. Do not be deceived by the picture below as it was taken post brunch time after the crowd dissipated.
The Food Apart from coffee, all-day Brunch is served where there is the omnipresent Eggs Benedict and Pancakes. Light bites such as Shepherd’s Pie, Truffle Fries and Toast Bread are served as well.
Desserts include the likes of Brownie cakes, waffles, affogato and the cafe’s home-made ice-cream.
The Hot Mocha ($5.90) is aromatic and well accompanied by the caramel biscuit.
The Iced Mocha ($6.90) is similarly satisfying as well, with the rich dose of cocoa and right mix of coffee, a perfect beverage for a lazy weekend afternoon.
In terms of light bites, I managed to try the much raved Truffle Fries ($8). To be honest, I was not expecting much from a cafe in terms of serving good truffle fries but I am pleasantly surprised that the truffle fries at Habitat Coffee is surprisingly good. It may not be the best ones around but at least I feel that I was not shortchanged by the use of truffle in their menu. The servings are pretty generous as well, not to mention also that the taste and smell of the truffle oil is strong enough for my liking.
Rants It can get pretty noisy during peak hours and it does not help that the acoustics of the cafe is not the best of all. No doubt that the coffee here is decently brewed, there seems to be a lack of distinguishing factor of Habitat Coffee as opposed to the well-known players such as Loysel’s Toy or Chye Seng Huat Hardware.
Will I return again? It is increasingly difficult to find reasons to return to a cafe or restaurant especially when there are so many new ones springing up every month. Unless I am in the vicinity or a resident around Upper Thomson, I may be more inclined to check out other new cafes.
