Food Review: The Peranakan Club, Orchard Towers — When Heritage Collides With One Of Singapore’s Most Notorious Buildings
The Place Let’s get this out of the way first: nobody expects to eat refined, heritage-driven Peranakan food inside Orchard Towers. And yet, here we are at The Peranakan Club — stepping into a 5,000‑square‑foot space that feels less like a restaurant and more like a Peranakan museum.

Opened in early February this year, The Peranakan Club isn’t just a place to makan. It is a multi‑concept destination housing The Little Nyonya restaurant, a private tok panjang dining room, a kebaya‑themed cocktail bar, a tea lounge, and an in‑house museum and retail atelier — all under one roof, all unapologetically theatrical in its celebration of Straits Chinese culture.

The Food It is an extensive menu to say the least and I started with one of the Peranakan staple starter dish – Kueh Pie Ti (Prawn/Crab) (S$22), where you get crispy pastry shells filled with braised turnips.

Next up was Prawn Ngoh Hiang (S$18) where thick, minced pork and prawns are wrapped in a delicate beancurd skin and fried.

On to soups, the Bakwan Kepiting (S$17) is classic Peranakan comfort — a clear, naturally sweet bamboo shoot broth carrying tender crab‑pork meatballs.

I also had their Itek Tim (S$17) which is a classic “salted vegetable” duck soup.

If there’s one dish that defines the kitchen’s seriousness about heritage, it’s the Nasi Ulam Dulu Kala (S$24). This is not your casual herb rice as Nasi ulam is notoriously labour‑intensive. Finely julienned herbs are meticulously balanced so that no single leaf overpowers the others. This is very much a dish for people who appreciate nuance over punchiness.

Other signature dishes I had include the likes of Ayam Buah Keluak (S$25) with an earthy and bitter‑sweet gravy; Dry Laksa (S$24) which comes with tiger prawn and quail eggs; and Beef Rendang (S$26) with tender beef shin slow–cooked for hours in a reduction of coconut milk and 15 aromatic spices.

For desserts, expect classics like Heritage Durian Pengat (S$8.50) and Chendol Melaka (S$8.50).

Rants The flavours of some dishes are not as punchy as I expected.
Will I Return Again? If you fancy the idea of Peranakan food in an unexpected location and museum-like setting like Orchard Towers, this is one to check out with a group of friends or family. There are dozens of dishes on the menu so it is most suited for small and big groups.
