The Place A restaurant which has been around for decades in Beach Road, Golden Mile Thien Kee Steamboat located at the basement of a Golden Mile Tower is a popular destination. Yes, I would coin this “destination dining” as there really is no other reason to be in this building. It is common to arrive here during the evening to be greeted by a huge crowd, and the tables even take up the space outside the restaurant.
The Food Other than steamboat, what makes Thien Kee Steamboat popular is also its Hainanese Style Chicken Rice. It is common for diners including myself to order a steamboat set and supplement the meal with chicken rice.
The steamboat set is a standard combination of ingredients and you can’t customise it. If you have allergies to certain meats, let the staff know and they will substitute with more portions of other meats. I had the Steamboat Set (S$36 for 2 persons) which comes with ingredients like beef, chicken, pork, fish ball, prawns, fish maw and vegetables.
Quality wise, it is really quite basic. The broth is a clear soup with not much flavour, so don’t bother drinking it at the start. For the meats, nothing impressive.
I also ordered the Hainanese Chicken (S$8 for 2 pax portion), which is the saving grace of the meal. I wouldn’t come here specially for the Chicken Rice (S$1.20 per bowl of rice), but least to say the chicken is quite tender and tasty. The rice is not too oily too. The chicken rice goes really well with the steamboat though, and this is perhaps a signature of dining at Thien Kee.
Rants I have huge issues with the service here, a nonchalant attitude of the staff in general. It reminded me of the bad service I get in teahouses in Hong Kong.
Will I Return Again? Mediocre steamboat and bad service, there is very little reason to be here except for nostalgic reasons and the Hainanese Chicken Rice. My mum insisted on coming here, fyi.
