Food Review: Sushi Michi At Orchard Plaza | Affordable Japanese Sushi Omakase From S$80++ In Orchard Road [Closed]
The Place Opened quietly for about three weeks in Orchard Plaza by the same team behind Yuta which is one of the most affordable Japanese Omakase restaurants in Orchard Road, Sushi Michi is a cosy and intimate 12-seater counter seating Japanese Omakase restaurant with a focus on sushi Omakase. It is not a huge space, though the huge mirror does help to create an illusion of a more spacious setting.

The Food There is only set Omakase menus at Sushi Michi where there are two lunch menus – Tama Omakase (S$80, 13 courses with 10 pieces of nigiri) or Yuu Omakase (S$108, 13 courses with 10 pieces of premium nigiri). For dinner, choose from the Mizu Omakase (S$128, 18 courses with 12 pieces of nigiri) or the Kagayaki Omakase (S$168, 20 courses with 14 pieces of nigiri).

I had the Kagayaki Omakase and the meal started with a series of appetisers.
The first appetiser I had was the Akami with seaweed, which is essentially marinated tuna which reminds me of “poke”.

Next up for the second appetiser I had the is an Ebi topped with Uni and Caviar in an egg yolk sauce with vinegar, along with sliced scallops beneath.

The last appetiser is a Sashimi course where I had three types of tuna – Akami, Chutoro and Otoro. Glad to say the slices are quite thick and even the Akami spots a flavourful profile, not to mention the fattier Chutoro and Otoro.

The next part of the meal is the Nigiri courses, and in general, I do find the Shari to be on the drier side and I would personally prefer if the texture of the Shari is more moist and the flavour profile a little sweeter.

Here are the Nigiri courses I had on the Kagayaki menu:
Mako Karei (Marbled Sole)

Hobo (Red Gunnard)
This sushi is mixed with some yuzu kosho sauce hence there is a tinge of spiciness here.

Renko Dai (Golden Sea Bream)
The sea bream is torched slightly before being topped with some lime jelly.

Hirame (Olive Flounder) with Engawa (Flounder)
The fish is torched slightly and then brushed with ponzu sauce. A reasonably fatty flavour of the fish here.

Mejina (Blackfish)

Shima Aji (Striped Jack)
My favourite sushi so far till this meal. I love the flavourful profile of this fish, especially after it is topped with chef’s homemade spring onion sauce.

Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper)

Kanpachi (Amberjack)
I love the chewy texture of the Kanpachi which has bits of truffle oil and truffle salt on the fish.

Aka Ebi (Red Shrimp)
Torched and topped with caviar and ikura, you get a nice burst of flavours along with the fresh shrimp taste.

Aburi Hotate (Scallop)

Chutoro

Otoro

Negitoro (Minced Tuna) topped with Uni (Sea Urchin) Handroll
One of the most luxurious courses on the menu, it is also topped with caviar before being wrapped in seaweed.

Tamago

Uni Handroll
The second handroll course of the meal is a full-on Uni version where the Bafun Narabi Uni is luscious and fresh.

Soup
A comforting hot soup with slices of fish within to conclude the Nigiri courses.

Dessert
A simple Goma (black sesame) ice-cream to conclude the dinner.

Rants The space could be quite tight if the restaurant is at full capacity.
Will I Return Again? A no-frills Omakase option hidden in Orchard Plaza where lunch starts from an affordable S$80.
This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
