Food Review: Mother Earth Classic At Geylang | Modern Vegetarian Restaurant With Wide Selection Of Dishes

The Place The second outlet of vegetarian Chinese restaurant Mother Earth (first outlet in Jurong), Mother Earth Classic (大地之素) opened recently right beside San Shu Gong Private Dining, the Geylang outlet boats an extensive selection of familiar looking dishes for those who are not vegetarian. Think Triple Satay Platter with Monkey Head Mushroom Satay, Crabmeat Sauce with Golden Pillows, Crispy Yam Ring, Fruity Youtiao Rojak, and more. It is also vegan friendly, just inform the staff if you have vegan requirements.

The interior of the restaurant is simple with a main dining hall and a private room which can accommodate at least 10 people.

The Food The menu is extensive at Mother Earth Classic and for a non-vegetarian like me, there are many familiar looking dishes which I could not imagine are completely vegetarian in this restaurant.

For a start, the Crispy Fish Skin with Salted Egg (S$12) is an appetiser which will not go very wrong. While the restaurant is not positioned as a vegan concept, the team is also able to accommodate vegan requests. I also like the Fruity You Tiao Rojak (S$5) where the homemade sauce stands out most for me.

The Crabmeat Sauce with Golden Pillows (S$12/small) is a familiar Singaporean dish where the fried ‘man tou’ goes with the delicious crabmeat sauce.

The Signature Salted Egg Tofu with Almonds (S$10/small) spots a strong salted egg flavour which I thought could be toned down a little as it gets too overpowering. Similarly, I also feel that the Spinach in Salted Egg Pumpkin Sauce (S$18) is a tad heavy on the salted egg sauce.

For a safe option, go for the Crispy Yam Ring with Kyoto Pork Ribs with Lychee (S$22) where the yam texture is crispy and delicious.

Another good sharing dish is the Triple Satay Platter ($20/4×3 satays) which comes with cucumber and tempeh. This features mock pork and chicken satay along with Monkey Head Mushroom.

For desserts, expect the likes of ‘Tau Suan’ with Water Chestnut and Dough Fritters (S$5) and Yam Paste with Ginkgo Nuts ($5) which I enjoyed.

Rants The interior of the restaurant is a little sleepy looking as there is not much natural light that streams in.

Will I Return Again? If you are looking for a vegetarian restaurant to try, Mother Earth Classic is a good ‘zi char’ style restaurant option to check out. There is almost something for everyone on its extensive menu and you would be surprised by how modernised vegetarian food can be.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
