Food Review: Brasserie Astoria Singapore At Victoria Theater & Concert Hall | Restaurant Zen’s Sister Outlet By Frantzén Group
The Place Located at the iconic Victoria Theater & Concert Hall, I checked out the new Brasserie Astoria Singapore, an international brasserie concept part of the Frantzén Group, which is also the team behind 3-Michelin starred Restaurant Zen. The concept of Brasserie Astoria was introduced in 2021 in Stockholm in a venue that was once a cinema, so it is quite interesting that the Singapore outpost is housed in a concert hall building.

The interior of Brasserie Astoria Singapore is elegant, as the high ceiling lends a certain grandeur to the dining ambience.

I like that the tables are designed in such a way which makes it quite private for each group, yet it is cosy and intimate at the same time. One of the spotlights of the interior is also the huge bar area at the centre of the restaurant, where diners can grab a drink and sit by the bar as well. The restaurant can accommodate 100 diners, and it also has a private dining room which accommodates up to 10 people.

The Food It is an extensive à la carte menu where several dishes are presented on serving carts and served tableside. The cuisine is largely modern European with Nordic influences. There is only one menu which is the same for lunch and dinner. In terms of beverages, the wine list is a comprehensive selection of wines from Austria to Australia, along with a robust cocktail menu.

From the gourmandise section, my meal started with the delicious Spanish Ham (S$21, Pata Negra) paired with Charentais melon from Philibon, pine nuts & espelette pepper; as well as a platter of Crudités (S$17) served with Ranch dressing.

The Calamares Fritos (S$14) is an easy snack to share where the squid is coated with black pepper, green onions, lime & served with galangal aioli dip.

Perhaps the most luxurious item on the menu, the Astoria Osciétra Caviar (S$130/30g) is served with chef’s signature parsnip waffles, crème fraîche, lime & browned butter. You can choose the amount of caviar to pair with the waffles, with the minimum being 30g.

Spread the crème fraiche on the waffle, topped it with the caviar and browned butter sauce along with some lime, it is as indulgent as a snack could get.

Moving on to starters, my favourite is the Toast Astoria (S$32) where the toast spots a nice buttery flavour. The harmonious toppings are delicious too, a mix of prawns, Norwegian king crab, trout roe & ikura, wasabi aioli & pickled red onion.

Another starter worth trying is the Butter Fried «råraka» (S$36), the Swedish answer to rosti. I love the crisp Agria potatoes, which comes with various condiments to top it up, such as Vendace roe, chives, crème fraîche, red onion & lemon.

For more caviar action, there is also the Quenelle & Caviar (S$65) which features scallop quenelle in a sauce vin jaune & barley koji butter. Think of it as a sophisticated scallop dish topped with caviar.

Moving on to the bigger plates, the Moules à la crème (S$42) is great to share, a big pot of mussel beurre blanc, Jalapeño aioli, spring onion oil & pommes frites.

For meats, the Grilled Spring Chicken «Buffalo style» (S$90, serves for two) is great for sharing, even for 3-4 diners if you are planning to try other dishes. I love how tender and flavourful the chicken meat is in the corn velouté sauce, and it is served with sides like macaroni pudding and salad verte with yuzunette & grilled lemon.

The most theatrical dish for me is the Whiskey Flambéed Beef (prepared tableside) (S$68/Angus, S$110/Wagyu) where the climax of the tableside service is the huge flames as the whiskey is poured over the beef along with Kampot & green pepper sauce.

Expect a flavourful and well-cooked medium-rare beef with a strong hint of whiskey taste which is quite good.

There are also crisp roasted potatoes glazed with Fourme d´Ambert served with the beef by the side.

To balance the meats, there is also the Caesar Salad (S$46, prepared tableside) made on the spot which features tender grilled chicken breast along with toasted pine nuts, smoked pork belly cubes, chives, kale, and parmesan aged 24 months «Vacche Rosse» & marinated green beans.

For desserts, there are quite a couple of options, and I tried the Tutti-frutti Soft Ice Cream (S$14) with homemade sprinkles which looks a tad too sweet looking for me; and «The waffle Ice Cream» (S$20) which features Pistachio waffle sandwiched with oolong ice cream & raspberry.

Rants There is no parking in the building for drivers with the nearest carpark over at National Gallery Singapore.
Will I Return Again? Good food in general in a beautiful space, Brasserie Astoria Singapore is great for small groups as the menu is designed for sharing. Of course, it is also a nice venue for couple dates since the ambience is quite romantic in the evening. Prices are on the steep end, though it is definitely a more economical dining experience as compared to its sister Restaurant Zen.
This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
