Food Review: Kou Teppan At Great World City | Affordable Japanese Teppanyaki Omakase Restaurant In Singapore From S$58++

The Place Located beside Haku Sushi in Great World City, Kou Teppan restaurant is by the same RE&S group, and it specialises in a Teppanyaki Omakase at an affordable price point. The interior of Kou Teppan is spacious and there are two teppanyaki counter sections, along with a couple of non-counter tables.

The Food The restaurant is helmed by Chef Sawada Ko, who was a former executive chef at Itoh Dining by Nobu, where the menu features seasonal ingredients prepared on both main and personal teppan griddles.

The main teppan griddle sets the stage for the chefs to prepare dishes along with a visual treat for diners. Selected dishes are then prepared on the private teppan griddle in front of diners for a more interactive experience. The dinner Hino Menu is priced at S$88++ while the lunch Enya Menu is priced at S$58++, very reasonably priced in terms of omakase menu in Singapore’s context.

For drinks, there is a good value sake flight (three sake samplers) priced at S$15. Alternatively, wine and sake pairings are available at S$48/pax.

I had the Hino Menu (S$88++) and here is what to expect:

Chef’s Appetiser (3 Kinds)
A trio of starters which include Salmon Tartare, Tomato Tofu and pan-seared Hokkaido scallops with anchovy sauce.

Seasonal Soup
This is quite a unique flavour, a thick texture of Edamame soup with truffle. The taste is surprisingly well-balanced and smooth.

Seasonal Teppan Japanese Vegetables
An assortment of vegetables is up next, where I had mushrooms, sweet potatoes, eggplant and Japanese green pepper. The best part? It is drizzled with Sea Urchin sauce, which is quite rich in taste, and I could imagine some diners would prefer it if the sauce is served by the side instead.

Seasonal Kaisen Cartoccio
Literally a seafood course in a bag, this is a generous portion of Tai fish (sea bream) and clams in a clear broth.

For mains, there is a choice of Japanese A5 Wagyu (80g), Slow Cooked Japanese Pork Houbayaki, Lobster & Japanese Oyster (supplement S$40) or Premium Japanese A5 Wagyu Sirloin / Tenderloin (90g) (supplement S$40).

I had the Japanese A5 Wagyu (80g) which is served with wasabi sauce, fried garlic chips and onion. The sliced beef cubes are tender and succulent and cooked to medium as recommended by the staff. Overall, you get a good beef flavour even if you stick to the basic beef option.

Japanese A5 Wagyu Kamameshi / Garlic Rice
The last savoury course is a choice between the above, so if you have two diners, I recommend having one of each. I managed to try both, where the Kamameshi rice texture is moister than the garlic fried rice, where both versions of rice come with bits of beef.

Dessert
For dessert, I had a matcha cake with vanilla ice cream.

Rants It could get quite warm due to the heat from the teppan counter.

Will I Return Again? An affordable teppanyaki experience to check out which serves up very decent quality. This is by no means fine-dining, but you can be assured of good quality beef at the minimum.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
