Food Review: Wang’s Broth (小王煮瓜) In Taipei, Taiwan | Michelin Bib Gourmand, One Of The Best ‘Lu Rou Fan’ In Taipei

The Place I love my ‘Lu Rou Fan’/ Braised Pork Rice and one of my best eats and meals in my recent Taipei trip this year is Wang’s Broth (小王煮瓜), a Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee for a few consecutive years. Located in Wanhua District at Huaxi Street Night Market, Wang’s Broth has been around since 1975 and it used to be called 小王清湯瓜仔肉, before it rebranded and revamped its interior space to become Wang’s Broth in 2019.

I dropped by Wang’s Broth at a non-peak meal hour and even so, it was packed. The renovated space is very modern looking, unlike the typical old school vibes of most ‘Lu Rou Fan’ eateries in Taipei such as Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice. There are indoor air-conditioned seats and non-air-conditioned outdoor seats, and it is a relatively big space.

The Food The menu is a simple one-page paper where you simply tick your orders on the form and proceed to the counter to order and pay.

One of Wang’s Broth famous dish is the Steamed Minced Pork with Pickles in Broth (TWD70), where you get generous portions of delicious minced pork meat in a comforting broth cooked with cucumber. The broth is good and is slightly peppery. The best part? The soup is refillable.

On to the Braised Pork Rice (TWD60/large, TWD30/small), it is one of the best I had in Taipei so far. While the sauce looks dark and rich, I do not find it too salty, and the richness of the braised sauce just gets better as I dig deeper into bowl of rice.

It makes each grain of the rice so soft that every bite is an enjoyment. The pork itself leans towards thinly sliced fatty meat rather than lean meat, which is sinful but trust me, you will want to have it all.

The other version I had was the Braised Pork Rice with Mushroom (TWD70), where you get delicious braised mushroom slices mixed with the tender pork slices.

Side dishes to go along with the rice include the likes of Braised Duck Egg (TWD17) and Cabbage (TWD35/small).

Rants Nothing in particular.

Will I Return Again? I love the ‘Lu Rou Fan’/ Braised Pork Rice at Wang’s Broth and it is definitely one of the best ones I had so far. Plenty of seats, close to the MRT Station, affordable – no reason not to return again.
