Food Review: Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam In Kuala Lumpur | Popular Old School Hainanese Breakfast Spot In KL Since 1956

The Place Located along Jalan Balai Polis, Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam is one of the most popular breakfast spots in KL Chinatown area. It has been around since 1956 where the brand injects traditional Hainanese culture breakfast into the buzzing city. I arrived at 7:30am right on the dot of its opening hour, and there was already a long queue on a weekend. Take a queue number and wait for your number to be called, with the expected waiting time to be about 15-30 minutes.

It is a two-storey shophouse space in an old school coffeeshop interior, where I find level two to have a more pleasant dining ambience.

The Food helmed by Mr Ho Kow. the menu at Ho Know carries a range of hearty dishes such as Kaya Toast, Nasi Lemak, Curry Chee Cheong Fun and Chicken Horfun Soup, where the team use traditional way to make their coffee and prepare their food. Orders are taken efficiently where you simply need to fill up the order form and pass to the staff, and the waiting time is quite fast for my food.

I ordered the Butter & Kaya Toast Double (RM6.80), Half Boiled Eggs (RM3.40) and Black Coffee for a start. I love the soft-boiled eggs where the eggs are so fresh and boiled to the right runny degree.

The Traditional Kaya Toast spots a crispy texture with a good balance of kaya and butter, where the kaya taste really stood out for me as it is very fresh and fragrant. The kaya is also available for separate purchase if you would like to bring it home.

I also had the Butter Crunchy Peanut Sugar Bun (RM5), where the bun is loaded with heaps of peanut fillings and butter. A sinful treat which is very filling and is ideal for sharing.

Rants Be prepared to queue for a short while.

Will I Return Again? Head to Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam in Chinatown if you would like a flavour of Hainanese-style breakfast in KL. I like the fact that the location is convenient and not too far from the city centre, which is great for tourists. The queue may seem intimidating, but it moves quite fast.
