Food Review: Sushi to Sumi At Plus, Raffles Place | Omakase Menu From S$30++ At Singapore’s First Standing Japanese Omakase Dining

The Place A new Japanese Omakase has quietly opened in Raffles Place. Meet Sushi to Sumi, a standing sushi Omakase restaurant located on level two of Plus building. Sushi to Sumi has amassed a strong following since it opened, where lunch slots are typically packed with CBD office workers. The no-frills restaurant is managed by Goodvibes Intl Pte Ltd, which is a wholesaler of fresh fish and other high-end ingredients from all over Japan. This is also Singapore’s first standing sushi restaurant directly managed by a fishmonger according to its website.

The interior of Sushi to Sumi is basic and is designed in L-shaped layout where you literally stand throughout your meal. I guess it is a good idea from the business perspective, so diners simply eat and go once they are done. In some aspects, it does remind me of the Japanese culture in Japan where office workers have their quick lunch or dinner fix during or after work.

The Food The unique selling proposition of Sushi to Sumi is the competitive price. Lunch starts from S$30 for their Ume Menu which is an 11-course meal for 8 pieces of sushi, chawanmushi, a grilled seafood dish, and miso soup. There are also the Take (S$45) and Matsu (S$80) sets which come with 10 and 12 pieces of sushi respectively. For lunch, it only offers sushi and charcoal grill courses.

For dinner, the Omakase menus include Ume (S$50), Take (S$80) and Matsu (S$120), for 8, 10 and 12 pieces of sushi respectively. A la carte dishes are also available for dinner.

I decided to go for the Take (S$45) menu for lunch, and the whole meal took less than 45 minutes to finish. Here are some of the courses to expect:

Seaweed with Mackerel

 Snapper

Skilfish Abura Bozu

Grilled Octopus

Tobiko Fish Roe

Yellowtail

Sawara Spanish Mackerel

Amaebi

Japanese Salmon

Chutoro

Miso Soup

Rants Not much interaction between the chef and diners, at least from my observation and experience. And of course, be prepared to rub shoulders with other diners.

Will I Return Again? If you do not mind a no frills Omakase meal where quality is decent for its price, Sushi to Sumi is worth a try to satisfy your Japanese sushi cravings. This is easily the cheapest Japanese sushi omakase dining in Raffles Place, and possibly Singapore for now.
