Food Review: Wo Wo Dian (窝窝店 百年包子) At Raffles City | 130-Years Legacy Bun Brand From Sichuan Opens In Singapore

The Place One of the newest dining additions Raffles City, I checked out Wo Wo Dian (窝窝店 百年包子) over the weekend, a steamed bun and rice noodles specialist with a 130-years legacy from Mianyang, Sichuan. The casual Chinese restaurant is located at basement one of the mall, just a few doors down from Din Tai Fung. The interior of Wo Wo Dian is modern, open concept and casual, so it was quite packed during my visit despite the relatively big space.

From 16th to 19th May 2024, enjoy 40% off your total bill when you dine-in at Wo Wo Dian. Applicable to all food, drinks and dessert menu.

The Food It started with steamed buns, though the menu is more than just buns now with options like rice noodles, mapo tofu, boiling water-cooked sliced meat, and firecracker chicken. Other signatures also include the likes of Noodles and Mouthwatering Chicken.

I started with both the Century-old Traditional Pork Bun (S$8.90/3 pieces) and Century-old Sauced Pork Bun (S$7.90/3 pieces) and I must say, I love it. It is a soft and flurry bun texture along with delicious pork fillings, though I must say I much enjoyed the sauced pork bun over the traditional pork bun since the sauce gives the pork fillings a more flavourful profile.

The buns are made using traditional Mianyang bun making techniques by using ‘laomian’ (老面) aka traditional sourdough, as the dough for their handmade steamed buns.

My favouite dish other than the buns is the Kung Pao Eggplant with Fragrant Shrimp Balls (S$22.90), where you get a nice soft and crunchy texture for the deep-fried eggplant. It is best to have the eggplant together with the slightly spicy shrimp ball, so you get that nice combination of flavours together in one bite.

There is also the Boiled Pork Belly with Spicy Sauce (S$25.90) which goes well with some white rice. I am not a big fan of dishes with a layer of chilli oil in general, but at least I can say the pork here is quite delicious. The spiciness is mild to moderate level, and you can request to up the level when you order.

For noodles, I had the Classic Chicken Broth Rice Noodles (S$14.90) which looks like a very healthy bowl of ‘mee sua’. As it looks, the broth is quite light in flavour and it comes with copious slices of bamboo shoots. I did enjoy the soft rice noodles much more than the broth itself. It comes with small cubes of chicken meat, so don’t expect big pieces of chicken here.

For desserts, expect the likes of Poached Pear in Rice Wine (S$6.90) and Three Delicacies Iced Jelly (S$4.90). Both options are quite apt on the menu, especially after having some of the dishes with spicy notes.

Rants Be warned if your table is right next to the mall’s walkway as you might get alot of unwanted attention while eating.

Will I Return Again? Definitely head here for the steamed buns. I think it is a good addition to the mall where you can enjoy good Chinese food at accessible prices.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
