Food Review: Ginza Katsukami 2, Tokyo | Value For Money Multi-Course Tonkatsu Omakase Restaurant In Japan

The Place Located in the vibrant Ginza district in Tokyo, Ginza Katsukami is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant famous for its tonkatsu omakase courses. There are two outlets due to its popularity, and I checked out Ginza Katsukami 2 on my trip to Tokyo this year. The space of Ginza Katsukami 2 is intimate, and all the seats revolve around the counter and open kitchen. It is a minimalist décor where every seat gets a view of the chefs at work.

The Food Ginza Katsukami specializes in tonkatsu omakase, where it was the first time I had a tonkatsu omakase experience. You can expect a series of different pork cuts such as pork tenderloin, pork cheek, pork loin, and more throughout the omakase menu. I went for dinner where there are two seatings, 5:30pm or 7:30pm.

Here is what to expect for the Katsukami Course (7700 Yen) I went for:

Tomato Salad With Japanese Soup Stock Jelly
A refreshing cold course to start the meal.

Tenderloin Cutlet
The first pork course I had featured the tenderloin where the chef told us to suck the juice of the juicy pork first, before having it with the accompanying condiments like salt and sauce.

Today’s Lean Meat Cutlet 1
Next up was the breaded hip of pork which is a sweeter meat profile.

Today’s Lean Meat Cutlet 2
Moving on to the next lean meat where I had the Inner thigh part, and this was paired with some lemon or salt.

Minced Pork Cutlet
A more substantial course next was the Japanese burger with minced pork. Expect a juicy pork patty in a delicious brioche bun.

Palate cleanser
Mid-way through the meal, this palate cleanser was timely.

Cutlet Of Your Choice
Moving on to more pork cutlets, we were given a choice of the next course and I opted for Today’s Special Cutlet (+2000 yen) where I had my pork cutlet topped with Uni.

One of the other options here is “Today’s Rare Parts” which featured the Pork Cheek.

Crab Croquette (kitafuku’s crab)
A departure from pork, this course is probably a seasonal dish where I had the crab croquette filled with generous fillings of kitafuku crab.

Loin Cutlet
A tender loin course where it was uniquely topped with wasabi. The way to enjoy this dish is to spread the wasabi on the loin and have it along with some salt. The wasabi was very fresh, and it went very well with the pork loin cutlet.

Boston Butt Cutlet
The next course showcases the pork shoulder and the flavour profile got richer at this point, where we had to spread the butter on the pork, along with some salt and sauce. It is a fatty and juicy cut as one of the final pork courses in the meal.

Choice Of Rice Dishes
There are a couple of rice dishes to choose from and I had the Katsu-don which is an egg rice bowl with tonkatsu.

Shaved ice
Last but not least, dessert is shaved ice where you can choose from flavours like matcha, strawberry, mango and more.

Rants As I was in the first dinner seating, the meal was quite fast paced as there are about 12 courses and we need to be done in under two hours. The whole meal took about 90 minutes to complete.

Will I Return Again? I would not say I am very mind-blown by the overall experience as I definitely had better tonkatsu previously. The main selling point of Ginza Katsukami is the good value as you get to experience different cuts of pork at a reasonable price point. If a tonkatsu omakase sounds novel to you, then this is worth a try probably just once.
