Food Review: Sushi Zen At Teck Lim Road | Beijing’s Renowned Sushi Chef-Owner E Ran Opens In Singapore with Haute Japanese Sushiya

The Place Located at Teck Lim Road in the buzzing Keong Saik enclave, you might have walked past Sushi Zen without realising there is a Japanese omakase restaurant here. Opened for about a year in Singapore, the eight-seater Sushi Zen restaurant is by Beijing’s renowned sushi Chef-Owner E Ran.

Some interesting facts about Chef-Owner E Ran is that he started the culinary art of Japanese Edo-mae sushi from 17 years old and his strong following include famous personalities like Tim Cook, Angelababy, Shu Qi, Zhang Ziyi and Carina Lau. For one, it is also interesting to find a Chinese chef helming a Japanese omakase restaurant in Singapore which is not common.

The Food The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner with only set menus. Ingredients are sourced from Toyosu Market and flown to Singapore four times a week. Lunch omakase starts from S$150++ while dinner is from S$258++.

I had their Omakase Dinner Set Menu B (S$388++ per person) and here is what to expect:

Appetiser
A cold dish to start the Omakase meal, Junsai in a rich dashi broth.

Sashimi

Grilled Scallop
The plump scallop here is grilled to a nice golden hue along with soy sauce.

Nodoguro
My favourite Japanese fish is being grilled with salt and other than the fresh flavour, that crispy and fatty skin is the best part for me.

Fried Tachiuo (Beltfish)
A fried fish course here where the delicious fried tachiuo is incredibly good and not too greasy. The caviar is meant to replace salt. It is served with a side of red chilli pepper to go along with the fried fish for an even better flavour.

Nigiri
For Shari, Chef E Ran uses Nanatsuboshi Rice which is sourced from Hokkaido. He also personally ages selected fish based on texture, size, and type.

Ika (Squid)

Chutoro

Otoro

Negitoro

Kasugodai (Sea Bream)

Aji

Clam

Amaebi

Uni Handroll

Anago

Miso Soup

Tamago

Dessert
My favourite Shizuoka melon to conclude the meal.

Rants Prices are on the high end of the spectrum.

Will I Return Again? Good flavours at Sushi Zen where I enjoyed each course. Service is attentive and it is a cosy and intimate space for a Japanese omakase meal.
