Food Review: The Astor Grill At The St. Regis Singapore | Good Value 3-Course Set Lunch From S$58++

The Place There is a new dining concept at The St. Regis Singapore. Inspired by the heritage of St. Regis, founded on the original great chophouses set in early century New York, The Astor Grill took over the space of what used to be Brasserie Les Saveurs at the lobby. The Astor Grill focuses on steak and is helmed by Chef de Cuisine Angelo Sergio who brings with him decades of experience in butchery, dry ageing, curing and grilling.

The interior of the restaurant is not much different from how it looks like from its Brasserie Les Saveurs, except for some minor rearrangement of tables. You still get that grandeur and high ceiling dining ambience.

The Food The menu at The Astor Grill showcases an ensemble of various cuts from America, Australia and United Kingdom including bone-in, shell loin and dry aged. I had their weekday 3-course set lunch which is priced at S$58++ per person, a pretty good value if you work in the vicinity or for business lunches.

From the appetiser section, we had the Traditional Beef Tartare and Porcini Mushroom Veloute (supplement S$4). The beef tartare is topped with egg yolk, and you get that nice creamy texture as it is all mixed together, while the mushroom soup has a tinge of truffle flavour.

For mains, half of the options are various cuts of steaks, and non-steak options include the likes of the Butterfield Half Spring Chicken, Barramundi and Pumpkin Tortelli.

And you get to choose your knife as well.

We went for the Hanger Steak, Victoria, Australian Black Angus, a 120 days grain fed MB4+ cut. The steak is a generous 200g portion where the meat is flavourful and succulent.

We also wanted to try a non-steak option, and had the Butterfield Half Spring Chicken, a 250g chicken with breadcrumbs and gratin. Nothing too extraordinary here, I will recommend going for one of the steak options instead.

You also get to choose a steak sauce which includes the likes of Bearnaise, Chimichurri, and Chef’s Specialty Sauce.

In addition, you get a choice of one side dish such as Shoestring Fries, Grilled Asparagus (supplement S$4), Creamy Spinach, and more.

For desserts, I had the Chocolate Hazelnut Eclair and the Vanilla Cheesecake. Not too much of a surprise here, though there are five dessert options to choose from which is quite a variety for a lunch set menu.

If you want to go for the ala carte menu, there is a Cut of the Month which is a monthly feature of handpicked cuts by Chef Angelo available for lunch and dinner. For the months of July and August, it features the Livingstone Australian Full Blood Wagyu Striploin (250g, S$128). Livingstone Farms comprises a specialized collective of Victorian boutique farmers who are deeply committed to breeding Fullblood Wagyu beef and follow strict guidelines to ensure consistent high-quality cuts, representing the best MB 7-8 Wagyu.

Rants Unfortunately the 3-course lunch set is only for weekdays.

Will I Return Again? The 3-course set lunch is good value especially if I were to compare it to the ala carte menu prices. Service is attentive and it is a nice ambience to enjoy some good steak without breaking the bank.
