Food Review: 27 Degrees West (27°W) At Orchard Road | Mumbai Celebrity Chef Varun Inamdar Opens Indian Restaurant In Singapore

The Place A beautiful new contemporary Indian restaurant just opened recently along Orchard Road. Meet 27 Degrees West (27°W), Singapore’s latest Indian restaurant helmed by Mumbai celebrity – Chef Varun Inamdar.

It is a new ‘vibe dining’ restaurant that serves a melting pot of Northern and Southern Indian cuisine, where the space is split into the bar area and restaurant section, surrounded by greenery that it is hard to believe this is in the heart of Orchard Road. The name 27 Degrees West come about as it is named after India’s geographical position, which lies precisely 27 degrees west of Singapore.

The Food The menu at the restaurant is a mix of small and large plates designed for sharing. I started with the Togarashi Tossed Bhindi Jaipuri (S$15), a rendition of Jaipur’s popular chaats featuring crisp fried okra sprinkled with shichimi tōgarashi and a72-hour fermented beetroot chutney ketchup. A crispy snack which is easy to go with some drinks, and you get a tinge of spiciness.

The Crabmeat Thecha Thermidor (S$35) next up is made with crabs from India’s coastline with Thecha, a popular chili garlic condiment from India. Quite pricey for the size but you do get heaps of crabmeat.

For mains, you can’t go wrong with the ‘Varun Inamdar’ Butter Chicken (S$29), prepared from one of Chef Varun’s most popular recipes that has garnered millions of views on his culinary show in Mumbai. It is expectedly hearty, and you have to mop the gravy with some Naans.

Flavours for the Naan include Plain, Cheese, Black Pepper, Butter, Truffle or Garlic Naan (S$6).

If you are looking for a vegetarian main course, there is the Bagara Baingan (S$28) which is a different rendition from others as the eggplant is buckwheat crusted which gives it a different layered texture.

You can also opt for one of the seafood like Seabass (market price) and pair it with a choice of your sauce such as Coconut Moilee.

For dessert, I had the Varun’s Chocolate Mess (S$15), a creation concocted specially for The Obamas when they visited India. This is surprisingly not too sweet, featuring dark chocolate ganache with a mix of cranberry and raspberry.

Rants Prices are on the higher spectrum.

Will I Return Again? A beautiful space in Orchard Road to enjoy Indian cuisine done in a contemporary way. The vibes are edgy at 27 Degrees West, where the menu is diverse enough and the ambience ideal for social gatherings or casual business meals.
