Food Review: Moon Moon Food Singapore At Ngee Ann City | Taiwan Michelin Recommended Restaurant Opens First Overseas Outlet
The Place I was literally over the moon when I heard that Moon Moon Food from Taiwan is going to open in Singapore. The casual Taiwanese restaurant just opened its first overseas branch at Ngee Ann City, Singapore on 17 October 2024. For context, their flagship store on Qingdao East Road has earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand accolade every year since 2018. The brand’s name literally means double moons and is inspired by the traditional concept of reunion during the full moon, symbolising togetherness and completeness.

The restaurant is located on level 5 of Ngee Ann City, and it is an open concept with a beautiful wooden interior that is warm and inviting.

The Food The brand is known for its authentic Taiwanese health soups, as well as comforting flavours of homecooked meals. The menu is largely similar to Taiwan with some tweaks to the dishes and some Singapore exclusive dishes like the Taiwanese snacks category on the menu.

For a start, I had some cold appetisers like the Chinese Yam with Osmanthus Plum Sauce (S$7.80) and Shredded Stem Lettuce with Yuzu Vinaigrette (S$7.80).

One exclusive section on the menu to Singapore is the Taiwanese snacks and you can expect the likes of Taiwanese Salty Crispy Poppers (S$13.80), Crispy Prawn Cake with Yuzu Mayo (S$14.80) and Fried Taiwanese Tempura Bliss (S$11.80). My favourite is the crispoy fried chicken poppers, the kind of snack I crave for after a long day at work.
Note that the image below is a tasting platter of the trio, not the regular size.

From the braised selection, there is an option to mix and match any three braised items for S$10.80 (note that some items like Chicken Mid-joint Wings is an additional S$5.80). I tried the Bai Ye Tofu which is light and delicious in taste; the tender Chicken Mid-joint Wings and the Pork Moon Bone which is essentially tender slices of pork.

For soups, there are seven options to choose from which revolve around different variations of chicken soup. The signature Chicken Soup with Clam (S$23.80) is a big portion of hearty soup topped with copious clams and cabbage for some natural sweetness. The soup is almost over-flowing with ingredients.

I also tried the Sea Bass Soup with Clam (S$25.80) which is topped with a big piece of sea bass, beneath which lies copious clams and cabbage as well.

If there is one dish that I can repeatedly have here, it is definitely the Spicy Sesame Noodles (S$13.80) which is the dish I tried in Taipei which left such a deep impression on me. The al dente noodles are coated in a rich, nutty sesame sauce, with a well-balanced flavour and it is not at all spicy if you are wondering.

There are also rice options like the Glutinous Rice with Mushroom and Pork (S$8.80) and Braised Pork Rice (S$6.80) which are both reasonably good, but I will go for the Spicy Sesame Noodles any time.

Drink options are aplenty too and include the likes of Iced Grass Jelly Soya Milk (S$5.80) and the Mesona and Black Fungus (S$6.80). One of the Taiwanese staff highly recommended us to try the Mesona and Black Fungus which a certain Korean boyband star fell in love with when he had it in Taipei. True enough, I enjoyed this drink as well which is a mix of grass jelly and black fungus.

For dessert, go for the crispy and fried Taro Toast with Ice Cream (S$8.80), reminiscent of what I had seen before at Taiwanese night markets.

Rants Prices in Singapore are definitely (and expectedly) much higher than the Moon Moon Food outlets in Taiwan if that is a point of comparison.
Will I Return Again? I am so glad that Moon Moon Food has finally landed on our shores and provide another great option for casual Taiwanese cuisine.
