Food Review: Aunglo By Yangrak In Silom, Bangkok | Thai-Style Michelin Bib Gourmand Izakaya Restaurant

The Place Thai-style izakaya in Bangkok? That is probably what Aunglo by Yangrak is all about. Located in Silom within walking distance from The Standard Bangkok and W Bangkok, this Michelin Bib Gourmand casual restaurant presents modern Thai fare inspired by street food culture using an ancient Thai charcoal stove, or aunglo.

It is an intimate space on level one with most seats around the counter facing the open kitchen where the grilling takes place, and there are more seats on level two though the ambience is very much different and less lively.

The level two space suit group dining, and I definitely recommend solo diners or couples to request for a counter seat.

I usually try to have a good mix of Thai food when I am in Bangkok, be it a casual meal like Jeh O Chula (skip the insane queue by booking a slot on Klook), Michelin starred restaurants like Sorn and Baan Tepa, or a mid-range concept like Samlor.

The Food The menu comprises of small dishes, skewers and a few desserts, where the savoury dishes are mostly cooked on the charcoal flame.

I started with the Crispy Chicken Skin with inhouse Sriracha Sauce (THB 75), an easy snack to start which is somewhat refreshing and not as sinful as it sounds.

Another starter I highly recommend is the Coconut Pancake & Grilled Shrimp with Southern Style Curry Sauce (THB 190) which has a nice coconut aroma.

For once, the vegetable is more outstanding than the egg, as evident in the Scrambled Egg with Grilled Iceberg Lettuce (THB 145) where the greens are nicely grilled with a charred flavour beneath the blanket of scrambled egg.

Never have I had pumpkin this way. The Grilled Pumpkin with Massaman (THB 85) stands out as the soft pumpkin soaks up that delicious and mildly spicy massaman curry very well.

Of course, no visit to an izakaya is complete without trying some of the grilled meats. The Aunglo’s Moo-Ping (THB 95) features tender grilled pork served with egg yolk.

The Grilled Chicken with Cashew Nuts Sauce (THB 65) is expectedly delicious and tender as well.

For something more substantial, try one of the rice bowls like the Chinese Style Bbq Pork Rice Bowl (THB 199) which comes with generous portions of tender and fatty “char siew” along with grilled cabbage.

Rants I requested for a counter seat but was assigned a table on level one instead even though there was a remark on my booking for my request. The staff did mention to me that she will offer to shift me to a counter seat should it become available, and even so, I was not offered the option to when the counter seats were vacated. It is a small thing, but this is the type of small gesture which differentiates good and average service.

Will I Return Again? This is my second visit to Aunglo by Yangrak and I highly recommend this spot if love the idea of Thai flavours done in Japanese izakaya format. The dining ambience is casual while the prices of the dishes are generally reasonable, not to mention the rather extensive options on the menu as well. Ideal for couples, solo diners, or small groups.
