Food Review: Seoul Noodle Shop At Tanjong Pagar | Casual Kalguksu Specialty Korean Restaurant In Singapore

The Place Located in the heart of Tanjong Pagar, Seoul Noodle Shop is a popular casual Korean restaurant which often spot a long queue in this enclave. The Korean restaurant specialises in “kalguksu” which is traditional Korean knife-cut noodle dish, and it is apparently the first kalguksu specialty restaurant in Singapore. The brand started off as a pop-up concept in Tanglin Mall’s Market Blue and its popularity also stems from the fact that it is by Korean celebrity chefs Lee Won-il and Hong Seok Cheon.

There are three outlets for now at Tanglin Mall, Tanjong Pagar, and Suntec City. The Tanjong Pagar outlet I visited for dinner spots a casual setting with a simple, no frills and clean aesthetic. The dining ambience is warm, with soft lighting and wooden tables.

The Food A variety of classic Korean comfort food with a focus on noodles. The knife-cut noodle (Kalguksu) at Seoul Noodle Shop is the main highlight where there are a variety of flavours to choose from. The noodles are handmade with a chewy texture.

One of their signature dishes I had is their Pork Bone Spicy Noodle Soup (S$20.50). The star of this dish is undoubtedly the massive chunk of pork spine, along with tender pork meat. Similar to the classic gamjatang, the soup is finished with a sprinkle of perilla seed powder, which imparts a rich, nutty, and earthy depth to the broth.

I find it quite spicy, so this might not suit you if your threshold for spiciness is low.

Alternatively, I also had the Big Rib Bone Noodles (S$29.50) which is a much lighter option than the spicy noodle soup. The beef brisket broth here is easy to drink and it comes with braised beef back ribs. In terms of the noodles in general, it is subtly flavored, and it does complement the broth they are paired with.

Some side dishes I also had were the Kimchi Mandu (S$5 for three pieces) which comes in a big size and has a subtle hint of kimchi flavour; as well as the Kimchi Pancake (S$16.50) which is a decent rendition though I would have preferred the texture to be crispier.

Rants No reservations taken and expect a long line during peak meal hours. There is also a 90 minute dining limit.

Will I Return Again? This is a good option if you are craving for an authentic Korean noodles experience in a no-frills setting. For the decent quality of the food and the generous portions, the prices are very reasonable.
