Food Review: Humo Spanish Izakaya At Keong Saik Road | Tapas With Japanese Fusion Elements

The Place Located along Keong Saik Road, Humo is a new Spanish Izakaya restaurant by the same group AC Concepts which is also behind Nomada and Cenzo. The space of Humo exhibits Spanish and Japanese elements and it is casual spot which tries to combine both a traditional izakaya and a tapas bar together. The restaurant is not big and is ideal for couples of small groups.

The Food The menu is straightforward and is organized into cold and hot tapas, protein, rice and dessert. I started with the Argentinian Prawn Tártare on Crispy Rice Sushi (S$24) which is a nice fusion of Japanese sushi rice and Spanish tapas element.

A simple sounding dish but delicious is the Roasted Japanese Sweet Potato, Nori butter and Ikura (S$12), where the buttery potato is topped with ikura.

Other tapas dishes I had included the Crab and Prawn Croquettes (2pcs/S$10) and Tuna Tataki, Sauteed Mushrooms and Chipotle Mayo (S$34).

For protein, the Barramundi with Wasabi Salsa Verde (S$24) is a decent option. Nothing too groundbreaking here, and the flavours are quite light if this is what you are craving for. The wasabi taste is also quite mild.

The Pork Belly & Iberico Chorizo (S$38) donabe is good to share for 2-3 pax, where you get some bits of the crispy rice at the edges. The pork belly is expectedly flavourful and tender, while the rice itself spots a moist texture.

Rants The idea of Spanish izakaya might not be so clear to some diners as it is a fine line of getting that right balance between Spanish and Japanese elements.

Will I Return Again? A relatively casual spot in Keong Saik if you enjoy small bites in general. Spanish izakaya is a new idea in Singapore’s context, so come with an open mind. Prices are fairly reasonable too.
