Food Review: Magpie At Eng Hoon Street In Tiong Bahru | Borderless Cuisine, Edgy Dining Vibes

The Place Nestled on Eng Hoon Street in Tiong Bahru, I checked out Magpie on a weekend for dinner recently after a few failed attempts to get a table previously. Nestled on Eng Hoon Street in Tiong Bahru, the interior of Magpie blends dark wood tones with green-accented tiles and colonial-style wicker details, creating a relaxed yet refined dining vibe. Magpie also offers alfresco seating, ideal for pet‑friendly outing and casual drinks and they are shaded and fan cooled.

The kitchen counter seating offers a front-row view of culinary action in addition to a semi-private dining nook which seats about six.

The Food The cuisine direction is borderless soul food bistro by New Zealand‑born chef-owner Eliot Thomas, so you can expect different types of influences on the dishes from around the world.

My meal started with the Tandoor Bread (S$12) which is a soft and pillowy texture. It is good with some butter, or I also recommend saving some to mop up the sauces from the other dishes later.

The other starter I had was the Grilled Squid Chaat, Stone fruit, Yoghurt, Tamarind, Chickpeas (S$32).

The Gnocchi, Oyster Mushrooms, Fonduta, Aged Balsamic, Egg Yolk (S$34) is an easy dish to share where the gnocchi spots an al dente texture and it is overall quite a nice balance of the ingredients at play.

For meats, I enjoyed the Thread fin, Sago, Pomelo, Kaffir, Dashi Beurre Blanc (S$50) where the beurre blanc sauce is delish.

The Westholme Wagyu Hanger Steak, Palermo Peppers, Toum, Churrasco (S$58) fared well for me too as it is flavourful and not too fatty.

Alternatively, the Lamb T-Bone, Burnt Aubergibe, Tahini, Urfa Chilli, Pomegranate Molasses, Dill (S$52) is quite gamy but tender nonetheless.

For desserts, I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Mace Ice Cream & Salted Caramel (S$18) which is quite rich in taste, and probably better to share with 2-3 pax at the end of the meal.

Rants The portions of the dishes are generally small.

Will I Return Again? Magpie is an adventurous spot in Tiong Bahru to check out – playful small plates and meat-centric mains with bold flavours that cross continents. The space is ideal for date nights or small group gatherings, and its location in the hip Tiong Bahru estate adds to the charm.
