Food Review: Leila At Teck Lim Road | Middle Eastern-Balkan Gastro-Bar In Keong Saik

The Place There have been many changes to Keong Saik enclave and a new addition lately is Leila on Teck Lim Road. This is a cosy Middle Eastern–Balkan gastro-bar by Amira Collective, where the ambience is casual and relaxed. The space was quite lively when I visited on a weekday evening, where the music is quite loud too.

The Food The food is inspired by the coastlines of Mediterranean region and you can expect dishes like freshly baked breads, seafood and grilled meats on the menu. The menu is also designed around sharing plates concept where the idea is to order a few cocktails to go along with the food.

I started off with the Kubana Bread (S$15) – warm Yemeni-style brioche with tahini and tomato paste which is simple and comforting. It is quite a big portion and I like that the bread is soft and fluffy in texture and was served warm.

Next up, the Balkan Anchovy Bruschetta (S$21) tastes better than it sounds for me. It is your familiar bruschetta done differently: soft challah, creamy eggplant, Kalamata olives, cornichons, pickled onions, and olive oil. All the right layers, nothing too complicated.

The Green Chilli Shrimp (S$26) is straightforward and tasty where you get juicy and lightly charred prawns with green Tatbila sauce, and a fresh tomato-cucumber-herb salad on the side.

Then there is the Beef Kebab Skewers (S$25) which is nicely seasoned and served with a peppery mashwiya sauce and a splash of tahini. Familiar, with a little kick.

And don’t skip the Manseef (S$35)—a comforting Balkan favorite: minced chicken cooked with onion, all on a hummus and tahini base, topped with harissa. It is simple and hearty.

Rants The space of the high tables near the entrance can be a tad tight with people moving in and out of the restaurant frequently. The music is also quite loud which might not be ideal if you are looking for a relaxed and chill post-work vibe.

Will I Return Again? While Middle Eastern–Balkan sounds like an exotic territory, suffice to say there is much familiarity in the flavours of some of the dishes I tried at Leila. It is quite boisterous if that is the type of gastro-bar vibe you are looking for.
