Food Review: Kagami At Orchard Plaza | 16-Course Shabu-Sukiyaki Omakase At S$80

The Place If you love shabu shabu and sukiyaki in a hole in-the-wall setting in Singapore, this hidden spot in Orchard Road will be something of interest. Located at Orchard Plaza, Kagami is a Japanese omakase restaurant that offers the first ever shabu sukiyaki omakase in Singapore.

It is run by the same team behind Yuta just a few doors down, and the space of Kagami is a cosy and dark interior which can take seven diners at the counter and a small private room for up to six pax.

The Food You get to enjoy both shabu and sukiyaki dishes in one dinner course prepared and served piece by piece in an omakase setting. The 16-course Shabu Sukiyaki Omakase (S$80) is very reasonably priced with highlights such as a variety of A3-A5 Japanese wagyu, seafood and Hokkaido pork ingredients. Beverages are reasonably priced too with Wine Pairing Sake Pairing 4 Flights (S$60) or Sake Pairing 4 Flights (S$50).

The first act of the omakase is the Shabu course and here is what to expect:

Hamaguri

Hokkaido Kurobuta Pork Belly

Snow Crab Leg with Crab Vinegar

Snow Crab Leg with Crab Miso

A4 Miyazaki Beef

White Corn

A5 Hida Beef

Somen

The first act of the omakase is the Sukiyaki course and here is what to expect:

Hotate

Hokkaido Kurobuta Pork Belly

Raw egg yolk is served to dip the pork belly.

Seasonal Vegetables

A3 Sakura Wagyu
Raw egg yolk is served to dip the wagyu beef.

Black Sesame Beancurd

A5 Ohmi Beef

Special Sukiyaki Egg Rice

Dessert
A simple Hokkaido milk ice cream monaka was served to conclude the omakase.

Overall, the broth for the Shabu course is quite light while the heavier sauce of the Sukiyaki definitely adds to the flavour profile of the courses for the second part of the meal. I do enjoy the sukiyaki courses more.

Rants It is quite a tight dining space.

Will I Return Again? For S$80, Kagami offers a value for money shabu sukiyaki omakase in Singapore. Sukiyaki meals are typically quite pricey in Singapore, and this option fills up a gap in the below S$100 price range. Am I full after the meal? Suffice to say, I did not leave feeling hungry.
