Food Review: Fukusuke At International Plaza | Hole-In-The-Wall Japanese Izakaya In Tanjong Pagar
The Place Located on the ground floor of International Plaza (#01-02), it is easy to miss Fukusuke, even though it is facing the buzzing Guoco Tower in the heart of Tanjong Pagar. Fukusuke is a compact size izakaya restaurant with a no-frills and casual setting. There are limited seats – both tables or counter seats – and reservations are recommended.

The Food The menu is a varied mix of izakaya fares when I visited for dinner. One drink per diner at the minimum is also an obligation here. In addition to the ala carte menu, there are also some seasonal items.

For a start, one of my go to izakaya dishes is Chicken Nanban (S$13) which seriously can’t go very wrong. What’s not to love about fried chicken along with some drinks?

If you crave for more chicken like me, there is also the Chicken Karaage with Curry Mayo (S$10). I initially thought it will come with curry mayo sauce which sounds delish, but instead the curry mayo is in the form of curry powder on the chicken, which is slightly disappointing, though the chicken meat itself is juicy and flavourful.

A signature dish to go for here is their Ebi-Sinjou Steamed Shrimp Toast (S$15) – the toast is golden brown in texture and crisp on the outside and is layered with minced shrimps. It comes with a sweet-sour sauce which makes it very savoury to enjoy.

I also had their Hakata Ramen (Tonkotsu) (S$15) since it sounds like a comforting bowl to have. A relatively rich pork-bone broth without being cloying.

One seasonal item I had was the Fried White Corn (S$12). I love corn and this is quite decent and sweet.

The Salmon (S$19) is probably the most underwhelming dish I had as compared to the rest above. Nothing too special about this grilled salmon.

Rants The table space is quite tight especially when the dishes all arrive at about the same time.
Will I Return Again? A convenient spot for casual izakaya fares in Tanjong Pagar. Head here for a fuss-free meal, best for couples or a small group since the space is quite tight. Nothing too fancy, just comfort Japanese dishes which are easy to go with some drinks.
