Food Review: Song Gye Ok At The Centrepoint | Popular Korean Grilled Chicken Restaurant In Orchard Road

The Place Opened just six months ago along Telok Ayer, Song Gye Ok (SGO), Korea’s cult-favourite grilled chicken restaurant, is now newly opened at The Centrepoint. Located on level two of the mall, Song Gye Ok is known in Korea for its rare chicken specialty cuts and charcoal grilling by trained staff. It is Singapore’s first restaurant dedicated exclusively to Korean grilled chicken specialty cuts and is a no pork no lard concept.

The interior of The Centrepoint outlet is inspired by classic hanok house architecture, featuring warm wood textures and rustic roof eaves. At the heart of the space is a chef-fronted grilling bar and an open grill counter where diners get a full view of the chefs in action.

The main difference between Telok Ayer and The Centrepoint outlets is that diners can enjoy MODU’s signature Samgyetang in four nourishing flavours which is available all day at The Centrepoint outlet. This outlet also has the comforting Dakgomtang, a slow-simmered chicken soup.

The Food Each whole chicken is broken down into six distinct cuts, then grilled individually to highlight the unique texture and flavour of every part. You can choose to go for the set or the ala carte options.

For a start, I had the Truffle SamGyeTang (S$46), one of the four flavours available. A whole young chicken is slow-cooked for over 12 hours in a ginseng-infused broth, along with glutinous rice, leek, jujube, chives, pine nut and truffle. The chicken meat is soft and tender, while the broth is luscious.

For first timers, a better option is to go for the Prime Set (S$148/4pax). This set includes all of SGO’s grilled selections, 2 shareable dishes, and grilled rice ball.

The SGO Signature Set consists of 720g of chicken meat – Boneless chicken neck fillet, gizzard, heart, softbone, thigh, tenders & seasonal grilled vegetables. Each part is grilled by the staff, so I literally just sat back and relax.

In terms of the grilled chicken, I am not a big lover of innards, so my favourite parts are the boneless neck fillet and thigh, which retains the juiciness of the meat with slightly charred edges.

One of the shareable dishes to select is the SGO Cheongguk Doenjang Stew, a traditional Korean stew in a rich cheongguk doenjang broth along with tofu and vegetables.

There is also the refreshing and cold Bibim Noodles in flavorful gochujang sauce and vegetables.

From the ala carte menu, I also tried the Dakdoritang (S$48/standard size) which is a spicy chicken stew with potato, leek, and carrot in their signature sauce. This broth is quite spicy for me.

In terms of beverages, expect the likes of Earl Grey HighballNurungji Sikhye which is a traditional Korean sweet rice drink, and more.

Rants I couldn’t help but noticed how raw and cooked meats are placed on the grill at the same time. It is not a big issue, but it might also be better to keep it separate and remove all the cooked meats first before the next batch of raw meats are placed on the grill.

Will I Return Again? This is a nice spot for gatherings over grilled chicken and Samgyetang. The dining ambience is on point and the price point is also fairly reasonable at Song Gye Ok.
