Food Review: Amor At Amoy Street | Spanish Restaurant By Ex-Olivia Head Chef & General Manager

The Place Located at 107 Amoy Street, Amor is a newly opened Spanish restaurant by Ex-Olivia Head Chef & General Manager. The interior of Amor is inspired by Catalan modernism and Gaudí with curved arches and a series of varied intimate spaces. The space is also framed by a trencadís mosaic bar if you just fancy some drinks.

The Food Expect a diverse menu of Spanish delights, such as tapas where the menu offers 10 tapas creations from S$9. There are also lunch sets from S$38++ if you work in the vicinity. Do note that some of the images below do not reflect the actual size of the dishes as they are tasting portions.

I had a couple of tapas items for a start such as the Ostra ‘A La Barsa’ (S$10) where you get oyster with escabeche sauce; Jamon Iberico Croquettes (S$14) which spots a creamy bechamel sauce with melting ham within coated in a crispy potato crust; and Gambas AI Ajillo (S$34), where the sashimi-grade prawn is gently cooked in fragrant garlic oil.

One of my favourite dishes is the Happy Eggggg (S$18), unlike the usual egg dish as it is served in a martini glass with various layers: truffle sabayon, a 65°C onsen egg, roasted pumpkin coulis, crispy jamon chips, brown butter sourdough croutons, and a verdant chervil and dill salad. Mix it all up and the result is a well-blended flavour.

For protein, the Wagyu Short Ribs (S$34) comes with thinly sliced beef which is charcoal grilled along with buttery sauce.

For carbs, I had the Lobster Arroz Meloso (S$76) which features barbecued whole lobster where the texture of the rice is moist and flavourful.

For desserts, I had the Bombas ($10) which looks like a classic Catalan croquette, but it is reimagined here as a cold, creamy ice cream. The sphere is made with panko feuilletine, crema gelato, white chocolate crème fraise ‘Aioli’, orange ‘harrisa’, with a dab of paprika gel.

Another sweet signature is the Hazelnut & Almond Lava Cake ($18) made from hazelnut and almond praline. You get a warm molten, flowing centre which contrasts with the cold ice cream. That said, I do find it a tad too sweet.

And if you can only order one dessert, I recommend the Basque Burnt Cheesecake (S$16) which is a blend of various cheeses including blue cheese. Overall, the texture is creamy, and the cheese is not overly pungent for me.

Rants The flavours of the dishes are generally passable, though not memorable for me.

Will I Return Again? It is a relaxed dining vibe at Amor – not too formal nor casual. The space is ideal for a small cosy group gathering or couples, where you can just opt for tapas and drinks if you are not in the mood for something heavy.
