Food Review: Geylang Claypot Rice At Beach Road | Heritage Claypot Rice Brand In Singapore

The Place Now housed along 365 Beach Road in an air‑conditioned shophouse space, Geylang Claypot Rice relocated from Geylang to Beach Road a few years ago and it has decades of history (44 years to be exact) in Singapore. It started as a humble street-side stall before becoming a Geylang institution and earning a Michelin Plate in 2016.

The Beach Road space spots a contemporary interior which breathes a new lease of life into the brand — cleaner layout, more comfortable seating, but still retaining that unmistakable “traditional claypot rice” character that regulars swear by.

The Food Today, it continues to cook the old-school way, each claypot prepared from scratch over charcoal.

Despite being an old brand, it still tries to innovate, and their latest creation is the Beef Bone Marrow Claypot Rice (S$42). It was my first time having claypot rice in this flavour and this version features beef short ribs marinated and slow cooked in a rich, savoury sauce.

Egg yolk and bone marrow are separately added and mixed with the rest of the ingredients along with dark soy sauce, and it is a very rich flavour profile.

Of course, the OG flavour that most regulars will resonate with is the Signature Chicken Claypot Rice (S$22.80) with marinated boneless chicken leg, two types of lap cheong, salted fish and smoked pork belly. You get that smoky flavour in the rice along with the crisp base.

Other than claypot rice dishes, there are also other Zi Char dishes to complement the rice, including seafood such as the fresh BBQ Crab (S$18 for 1 crab).

I also tried dishes like the Signature Braised Lotus Root Duck (S$18.80/ one quarter portion, Prawns with Homemade Tofu (S$14.80), Prawn Paste Frog Leg (S$16.80) and Claypot Kai Lan with Prawn Paste & Pork Lard (S$12.80).

Rants Expect to wait 15-20 minutes for your claypot rice order.

Will I Return Again? Geylang Claypot Rice remains a must‑visit for fans of traditional claypot rice, especially now that it blends authentic flavours with a cleaner, more comfortable dining environment. It is great that heritage brands like this continue to keep the tradition alive, while trying to introduce new elements from time to time.
