Food Review: Chye Seng Huat Hardware

The Place From the folks behind the now defunct Papa Palheta and Loysel’s Toy, Chye Seng Huat Hardware is the latest addition to the brewing coffee scene in town. Located steps away from the Singapore Casket along Tyrwhitt Road, I wouldn’t say that the location is the most aspicious in Singapore for running a business. On the contrary, I am betting that the folks behind Chye Seng Huat Hardware is destined to “Huat” (get rich) from their latest venture as the barely one month old joint is already so well-received by coffee addicts judging from the incessant human traffic on weekends.

There are limited outdoor seats here at Chye Seng Huat Hardware and I will highly recommend getting the indoor air-conditioned seats for obvious reasons.

Apart from coffee drinking, there are also coffee workshops offered here where you can sign up to have a more intimate coffee drinking and sharing experience with the experts. This is also the factory where the coffee beans are roasted.

Trivial: Chye Seng Huat literally means “to flourish again” in Hokkien.

I am in love with the industrial setting of the whole place, from the old school metal entrance to the light bulbs and spot lights.

The only reason I can think of for the 360 degree roundtable open concept at Chye Seng Huat Hardware is that the Baristas are very confident of their skills. It is an interesting experience to sit around the counter and watch the specialty coffee making process.

The Food This place is for serious coffee drinkers judging from the menu. There is no mocha/latte/cappucino for the coffee wannabes but simply espresso. To sweeten things up, there are dessert offerings such as Crème brûlée, Muffins and Chocolate Cake. For the hungry souls, there is a food menu offering the likes of sandwiches and pancakes.

This is the coffee machine which does wonders to the arabica coffee beans.

We ordered the cold Brewed Coffee ($7) which looks unmistakably like the cough syrup from the pharmacy. I thought that it is quite a novel idea to equate coffee with medicine since caffeine by definition is a kinda drug.

For a pure taste of the Brewed Coffee, try it first without adding any sugar syrup or milk. The coffee taste is simply too bitter for my liking.

The version below is more fit for human consumption, after adding some milk and sugar sryup.

There are $10 set meals offered here where you can pair an espresso drink with a dessert of your choice. We ordered the espresso and paired it with the Chocolate CakeThe cake is a little too dry but I thought that the sweetness is just right.

For the espresso ($4 for 3 oz) shot we had, I must profess that it is really very strong such that I get goosebumps upon the first sip. It will probably be very effective if I have it every morning before work but a little too much for a lazy weekend. Therefore, I will try the espresso with milk the next time round instead.

Another dessert we had was the Hazelnut Coffee Muffin ($3.80), probably one of the best of its kind I ever had. The rich hazelnut flavour coupled with the perfect sugar content makes this muffin irresistible and less sinful.

Will I return again? There are not many hip coffee joints around in Singapore which is so serious in their coffee making business. For this sole simple reason, I will be back. It is also a plus point that Chye Seng Huat Hardware is within 1 km of TheRantingPanda’s sanctuary.

  1. Have you check out The Broers Cafe near CSHH? It is very near. It is located at 3 Petain Road. Had been there a few time. Good coffee and space. Try it out. =)
