Food Review: o/sio At Tanjong Pagar Road | Michelin-recognised Chef Shusaku Toba’s First Overseas Outpost

The Place Taking over the space of the now defunct PST Pizza Studio Tamaki – Singapore is o/sio from Tokyo, the original restaurant by Michelin-recognised Chef Shusaku Toba. This is the sister restaurant of sio pasta at Raffles City, where Chef Toba brings his restaurant from Tokyo’s Marunouchi district for its first international outpost.

Think of sio pasta as a faster paced and more causal concept as compared to o/sio which offers a broader expression of Chef Toba’s culinary philosophy. The interior has not changed much from PST Pizza, where the ambience of the shophouse space is relaxed and cosy.

The Food Expect fresh handmade pasta, charcoal-grilled meats, seasonal produce, sharing plates, desserts and wine in a relaxed and convivial setting designed for casual lunches and after-work drinks. In terms of menu for the Singapore outpost, there is slight variation to Tokyo.

The appetisers selection is very wide and I had their Crispy Sweet Shrimp (S$12.80) which is fried to a crisp texture.

Pasta selections are also very varied with all under S$30, where the Snow Crab Genovese (S$26.80) with basil pesto is done to an al dente texture and the heaps of snow crab is quite the highlight for me.

An exclusive creation for Singapore is the Smoked Truffle Carbonara (S$27.80) – expect black truffle, smoked pancctta, egg and garlic chips – a flavour that wouldn’t go very wrong.

The pizza selections are quite a handful, and the striking part is that they are all priced under S$20. The pizza size is not that big, but I guess it works if you like to order a variety to try. I went for the Maple Quattro Formaggo (S$16.80) as I wanted something really flavourful this sounds quite unique.

You get a strong cheese profile here – Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Mascarponc – along with black pepper and it also comes with a small dip of maple syrup so you can get a bit of the sweet and savoury profile if you choose to.

There are only two proteins on the menu for now, beef or Duroc pork chop. I had the 150 days Grain-fed Angus Beef Steak (S$28.80) served with shoestring fries. Nothing too surprising here, the medium-rare steak is not that fatty and spots a beefy flavour profile.

For dessert, I had a simple Basque Cheesecake (S$9.80) which is decent enough.

Rants There are only two protein options on the menu which hopefully will see more additions in the future.

Will I Return Again? Affordable Italian food are always welcoming and there is nothing on the menu above S$30 which makes o/sio quite an affordable dining spot in Tanjong Pagar district.
