Food Review: Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House

The Place Pork ribs soup (aka Bak Kuk Teh) is one of the most authentic Singaporean dishes and Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House is one of those names which pop up in my head whenever I am asked which is the best Bak Kuk Teh around in Singapore.
IMG_8910A household name since the 1950s, Ng Ah Sio serves authentic Teochew Bak Kuk Teh, which is the pepperish version as opposed to the Hokkien style. Personally, I am a greater fan of the more pepperish Teochew style. IMG_8869

The Food As with other Bak Kuk Teh eateries, the fried You Tiao (dough) is a must order to soak in the pork ribs soup. I also love to have beancurd along with my pork.

Shade your orders in the sheet below, if in doubt, just seek the assistance of the waiters.
IMG_8870 IMG_8871One highlight at Ng Ah Sio is the tea, where you can select your preference of tea and immerse in some tea culture session while preparing your own tea. The steps are pretty simple: Wash the cups with the boiling water next to your seat, pour the tea leaves in the pick packet into the teapot and let it soak for a few minutes, and you are ready to enjoy your tea. IMG_8906Beancurd is another favourite of mine.IMG_8900Finally this is what everyone is here for – the legendary Pork Ribs Soup. I guess what makes Ng Ah Sio so famous among its customers, which includes famous celebrities and politicians, is its tender pork and pepperish soup.  IMG_8901This is the typical spread for my meal, which is sufficient for 3-4 people.IMG_8892Rants The place can be very crowded at any time of the day so it is always advisable to budget some waiting time. Price wise, I do not have the exact breakdown of each dish but it cost about $35 for the above, which I would say is above the average price of a typical Bak Kuk Teh meal.

Will I return again? Is Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs the best in Singapore? I beg to differ, as I think there are better ones around which I will share in this space soon. Still, there is always reason to return, given its close proximity to where I am staying.
