Food Review: The Disgruntled Chef | Fine dining in Dempsey

The Place There are so many restaurants in Dempsey that it is often a struggle deciding what and where to eat, especially when you know that you are about to spend quite a bit on the posh choices. Having walked past The Disgruntled Chef many times, yet not having the chance to try out this restaurant, but thanks to the Entertainer App – there is a 1-for-1 on the mains!IMG_0625IMG_0653The Food The first thought that comes to my mind when I saw the menu – So expensive! The menu is mainly categorised mainly into big plates, small plates and sides, which is really just referring to appetisers and mains; with the cuisine of the food mainly Modern European done with some unexpected twist.IMG_0628IMG_0629For sides, we could not resist ordering the Roasted Mushrooms with garlic butter ($8), totally fragrant and perfect for sharing.IMG_0640The selection from the Small Plates section is quite interesting, with a wide selections from foie gras to mussels to scallops to bone marrow. We tried the Roasted Sea Scallops ($24) served with crispy prosciutto. The scallops is one of the best I have had, very fresh with a firm texture. The crispy prosciutto was damn addictive.IMG_0637The Baked Bone Marrow ($26) was stuffed with braised oxtail, very sinful yet totally worth the calories. It went totally well with the sourdough toast, just spread it out evenly across and sink your teeth into the fats! Be sinned!IMG_0651From the Big Plates, The Braised Pork Cheeks ($32) is suitable as mains for the less hungry souls as the serving was not huge. Not one of the best meat here though, tasted a tad too similar to the oriental Braised Pork served at our neighbouring coffee shop. IMG_0641The Roasted Stuffed Chicken ($32) came with hash browns and was served with Foie Gras Mousse, definitely one of my favourite dish of the night. The chicken was very well marinated and tender with a tinge of foie gras taste, which makes me wonder how the chef does it. The taste is very different from the Chinese style of roasted chicken – be awe!IMG_0648Rants Price is on the high side, no doubt. Somehow I feel that there seems to be something lacking in the restaurant. The food is good no doubt, but the setting and atmosphere does not make me want to sit through for hours to enjoy a meal. Probably this is what I would call a lack of touch dining experience.

Will I return again? 
I will skip The Disgruntled Chef in future. Maybe pretentious dining is just not for me.
