Food Review: Spicy Thai-Thai Café | Authentic Thai cuisine in Aljunied
The Place Some of the best cuisine seems to be found in the most nondescript location. As someone who eat to live, I believe in going all out to locate good food, even if it means a slightly offbeat location. This is the case for Spicy Thai-Thai Café, an eatery style Thai restaurant located in Aljunied within the HDB estate, which specialises in North-Eastern Thai food. The restaurant is not located near Aljunied MRT, but it has its fair share of regular customers as it was rather packed even on a weekday evening. The owner of Spicy Thai-Thai is very passionate about Thai cuisine, which we noticed from the extensive list of the menu, with more than 70 dishes to choose from. There are two Thai chefs in the kitchen, to keep the food as authentic as possible.
The Food According to the chef, the food at Spicy Thai-Thai is prepared as the same way back home in Thailand, hence some of the food might tend to be on the spicier end for those with lower tolerance levels. Do let the service staff know in advance if you prefer the food to be done less spicy. I was fortunate to try a wide range of dishes during my visit, and the conclusion at the end of the meal is that the quality of most of the dishes are above average as compared to the Thai restaurants I have tried in Singapore before.
The Lala (Clams) Bee Hoon ($18) is one of the highlights here, and I could understand why. Spicy lovers will rejoice at the aromatic spiciness of the bee hoon, which had the right texture and moisture. The Lala (Clams) was very fresh as well. This was a very comforting dish to have on a rainy evening.
We are familiar with Chinese style Hor Fun, but the Seafood Crispy Lad Na ($6) version here at Spicy Thai-Thai was quite different. I thought that the Lad Na (Thai style “Hor Fun”) had a texture similar to the Singapore style rice rolls, while the gravy was served separately. The overall taste was quite comforting as I quite enjoy the taste of Hor Fun personally, which had a rather similar feel to the Singapore version.

One of my favourites of the night was the Deep Fried Kang Kong with Special Thai Sauce ($10). I love how light the texture of the kang kong was, which was a twist from the usual Chinese Zi Char style. Pair it with the homemade Thai Sauce, it was heavenly.
The Basil Mussels ($15) was very fresh as well with rather generous portions.
The Water-fry Egg with Thai Style Crispy Sun-dried Fish ($12) was quite a surprise for me as I didn’t expect the egg to be so tasty despite just being cooked with water and no oil. Pair it with the crispy sun-dried fish, which was not merely for decorative purpose.
For beef lovers, do try the Nam Tok Neua (Basil Beef) Salad ($15) which had generous chunks of beef slices. Be warned that it could be quite spicy for the non-spicy takers.
For fish lovers, I would recommend trying the Red Emperor Snapper with Chilli Garlic ($/Seasonal Price). First bite into the snapper and I was surprised by how chewy the texture was, especially when the fish was so fresh and tender.
Comparatively, the equally fresh Thai Walking Cat Fish with Spicy Lemon Soup ($28) would be a treat if you can take a decent level of spiciness, as the spicy lemon soup (which was akin to tom yum soup in my opinion) was not to be trifled with.
Other notable dishes we tried that night included the Dill Pattie (Cha Om) Omelette ($8), BBQ Chicken Wings $6 (4 pieces) / $9 (6 pieces), BBQ Pork Neck ($10), Prawn Cake ($2/piece) and Fish Cake ($2/piece).
After the insane spread we tried, there was not much space for desserts for me but I managed to still steal some bites of the Sticky Glutinous Rice with Mango ($6), Thai Red Ruby ($3.50) and the Lemongrass Jelly with Aloe Vera Cubes & Calamansi ($2.50), which were all quite good and reminded me of the taste I had from Thailand.
Rants Some of the dishes such as the Lala (Clams) Bee Hoon and Nam Tok Neua (Basil Beef) Salad were too spicy for me but they were very tasty dishes, so my reminder to self is to ask for less spicy next time.
Will I return again? It seems like most authentic Thai food is found in housing estates and not in shopping malls. Spicy Thai-Thai café is certainly one hidden gem in the Aljunied enclave to satisfy my occasional Thai food craving.
