Food Review: Straits Express stationed in Kallang Wave | Reminiscing Colonial-Days Singapura Food

The Place Located at one of the newest malls in Singapore, the Kallang Wave at the Singapore Sports Hub, Straits Express seeks to cater a myriad of colonial days cuisine including Anglo Hainanese, Peranakan and Penang food all under one roof!

There are 3 concepts here, Straits Express being their restaurant, accompanied by a next door bar Crown and Anchor Beer and even a disco club China Two! While the music may be a little loud at times, expect a family-friendly dining environment here. So sit back and relax as we train through our colonial days food through the Straits Express!

The Food First up, Anglo Hainanese! Basically, it’s Hainanese-styled food prepared for the taste buds of the British, get it? This Oxtail Stew ($18.50) sounds really a English dish, but throw in some oriental spices, and it has been transformed into a Nanyang-styled dish. The stew here deserves another portion, “Waiter!”.

Moving on, my favourite Malaysian food is actually Penang food. Almost tempted to book my next budget flight out to Penang now! Lucky me, Straits Express woks this Penang Fried Kway Teow ($9) up, and it’s rather decent. Wouldn’t mind another plate of this!

Penang Lok Bak ($8) doesn’t look enticing, and well, didn’t find it particularly good as well.

Some locals still prefer the coconut-milk Laksa served locally, but if you are a fan of Penang Assam Laksa ($8), this might be something worth ordering. Not comparable to the best ones in Penang, but has an overall aroma and taste that temporarily subtle the thoughts of flying out to Penang next.

And how can we neglect the Peranakan options, the Durian Pengat, Chendol and Ice Kacang are some of the popular desserts here. For the durian lovers, do make sure you order one of the Durian Pengat, accordingly to the folks whom tasted it, they have gave it an arousing thumbs-up! (Disclaimer: I dislike durian, so you be your own judge)

Rants The loud music coming from the bar/club next door doesn’t make Straits Express an ideal place for a quiet family meal.

Will I return again? Probably. Definitely one of the better options amongst the family friendly restaurant options at Kallang Wave mall, but I may not travel down specially just for this.
