The Place When we heard that there is a roast meat specialty stall in Jalan Besar, we were excited to check it out. Located in a coffeeshop along Tyrwhitt Road, Hong Kong 88 Roast Meat Specialist has recently moved across the street from its previous location along Foch Road. Other than it’s roast meat stall, the adjacent Wanton Mee stall in the coffeeshop is also run by the team, using the same roast meat in their noodles.
The Food Roast duck, Roast Pork Belly (‘Sio Bak’) and Char Siew – you can choose from various standard options of mixed platter or simply have your choice of meat with rice. As it was our first visit, we decided to try the Mixed Platter for the three types of meats. One other noteworthy point is to opt for Chicken Rice instead of plain white rice, which was delicious on its own.
Our favourite is unanimously the Sio Bak, which is easily one of the best we had for a long while. The texture is very crispy, and it simply had the right balance of fats in its meat to give it a nice and chewy texture.
The Char Siew and Roast Duck were more ordinary in terms of flavour as compared to the Sio Bak. The former could definitely do with more char on its texture, while the Roast Duck came across as a tad too dry for us. We reckoned that we have been too spoilt by Wagyu Ducks these days.
Rants If you visit the stall during late afternoon, there is high chance that most of the meats are sold out. The official opening hours is really not representative at all. Visit during lunch hours to avoid leaving disappointed.
Will I Return Again? For one of the best Sio Bak around, we have no qualms returning for it. Skip the other meats if you have limited space.
