Food Review: Sin Heng Kee Porridge at Hougang | One of the best porridge in Singapore

The Place The common misconception is that the North-East part of Singapore is not very exciting when it comes to good food. Well, that really depends on what’s your comfort food. We have always been a fan of Sin Heng Kee Porridge in Hougang Street 61, which also has another outlet in Yishun. The nondescript eatery is located at a void deck, which often sees a long queue be it mornings or evenings.

The Food There are more than twenty types of porridge combinations to choose from, with prices ranging from S$4 onwards. On to the porridge, it is easily one of the best ones we had in Singapore. The texture is soft, and the overall flavour is very tasty instead of the usual bland taste we tried elsewhere. Do add an egg or the fried dough or “You Tiao” to it, it will taste even better.

Opened from day till night, this place is packed at all times. You will get a number tag after ordering, and the food will be served to your table. Yes, it is almost a must to secure a table first before ordering. The “You Tiao” is usually unavailable in the evenings. We finally managed to order it as a side dish during one of our morning breakfast sessions, and was quite surprised this side dish was served in a transparent bag. No-frills really. It wasn’t crispy, not the best out there, but I am just accustomed to having it along with my porridge.

Rants It is typically difficult to get a table, so do expect some waiting time there, including the time for your order to be prepared after it’s taken at the counter.

Will I Return Again? We lost count of the times we ate here at Sin Heng Kee Porridge as it always feel very comforting for us after a simple yet satisfying meal here. Such a hidden gem in this estate and corner of Singapore!
