Food Review: Birds of Paradise at Katong | This Joo Chiat’s Gelato will bring you to Paradise

The Place Located at the Joo Chiat / Katong district, Birds of Paradise is a relatively new gelato shop and in fact,  a great addition to the area. Designed as a space just for take-away, this is not a place to enjoy a sit-down chillax dessert indulgence after a meal – sadly. There’s an almost-chest high table at the side, which will allow a feel diners to enjoy their sweet treats while people-watching.

The Food Well, it’s gelato. And upon entering the shop, you will be pleasantly surprised by the aroma from the thyme-wafers which are freshly baked in store every day. And if you are in luck, you do enter the shop while the baking is ongoing – you might just want to bite into the thyme-wafers without any scoop of gelato to go with it!

The gelato options here includes both the usuals, Pistachio and Hazelnut. Both are delightfully enjoyable, with Birds of Paradise delivering the flavours creamy, yet light. So don’t expect the strong and robust flavours most gelato shops served in Singapore.

Other highly recommended flavours we have tried includes White Chrysanthemum and Pandan. The former being a rather unique flavour, and perfect if you like to sweet nodes of chrysanthemum, going in almost-perfect harmony with the thyme-wafer cones. Each scope starts from S$4.70, more for the premier flavours; with the thyme-wafer cones at S$1 each.

Rants It’s getting popular, and without any space to sit down and chill, this may not be the ideal spot for a relaxing dessert spot after meal times.

Will I Return Again? The wafer cones are lovely, and how I wished we can have this purchase separately. If you are looking for a lighter take on the usually strongly flavoured gelatos we have became used to, Birds of Paradise should come up top.

  1. Not so great service at Birds of Paradise in Katong. Refused to sell me an extra cone, some BS reason. Will not support them, hope you don’t either! Spoke to owner too, very arrogant – missed customer service 101 lesson.

    • Sad to hear that! We thought that the ice cream cones are for sale, maybe not? It’s always a bonus to maintain good customer service when business is brisk. Thanks for letting us know 🙂
