Food Review: Chicken Up Korean Restaurant at Buangkok | Meet the new UFO Snow Squid Topokki Stew!

The Place If you are fan of Korean food, Chicken Up Korean Restaurant should be a familiar name. The popular Korean restaurant has five outlets in Singapore, including heartland estates like Buangkok and Jurong East. We checked out the Buangkok outlet recently which is located right beside Buangkok MRT station. The space at Buangkok is not huge, but the setting is quite a cosy one with its orange lighting and wooden furnishings.

The Food The menu is fairly extensive, where you can find familiar Korean dishes such as Bulgogi, Kimchi Pancake, Crispy Chicken and Kimchi Fried Rice. The chain has recently added some new items to its menu, such as the UFO Bulgogi Stew, UFO Chicken Stew, Lotus Root Fries, Spam Rice Balls, Bulgogi Pancake and Makoli cocktails. We started off with the Soju Cocktail (S$25) with Yakult.

Fried chicken wings are one of my weakness, and I can’t resist having the Yangnyum Wings (S$12). The wings here are really good, marinated for more than twelve hours then deep-fried. The meat is flavourful, while the texture is very crispy and I would say, addictive.

The Bulgogi Pancake (S$18) we tried is an interesting take on the usual Kimchi or Seafood pancakes we are more accustomed too. The tender beef slices are wrapped within the pancakes, though the pancakes lacked the crisp I was looking for. Still, I find this interesting and satisfying.

For the UFO Snow Squid Topokki (S$42), it is ideal for 3-4 persons to share. This huge stew comprise of soft rice cake and fish cake with a spicy chilli paste sauce called gochujang topped with deep fried squid. The side ingredients are an interesting mix of fried Mandu, cheese, corn cheese, steamed egg and Kimchi fried rice. It may not be the best stew around, but it was an enjoyable one at least.

Rants For the branches at the neighbourhoods, not sure if the price point will work considering the affordable options at the next door food court.

Will I Return Again? I was surprised by the quality here at Chicken Up frankly. For a heartland option, it is a more than decent spot to enjoy Korean food in a comfortable and casual setting. Oh, and its available on the major food delivery apps too!
