Food Review: Amber Ember at Serangoon | Mellow Pink Hue Cafe in the North-East of Singapore

The Place It is always exciting to discover another new cafe in the North-East of Singapore. Meet Amber Ember, which only opened less than a month ago along Upper Serangoon Road. The location is not near any MRT station, though there is a bus stop right in front of the cafe. The cafe space is characterised by its mellow pink tones, with a mix of table sizes including a communal table at the back of the restaurant.

The Food The menu is not very comprehensive, but should suffice if you prefer not to have too many options in life sometimes. The savoury bites include various combinations of Jaffles, such as the Truffle Shrooms (S$11) or K-Pork (S$10). The Brunch section is limited but include catchy dishes such as Fu Yong Eggs (S$11), a Chinese style omelette with mushroom on sourdough; or something safer like Carbonara (S$14). Side dishes include the like of fried chicken and even Szechuan Spiced Fries (S$8). There is no service charge or GST.

I tried the Truffles Shrooms (S$11), which come with a choice of sides like fries or sweet potato mash. The jaffles feels more like a sandwich than anything, so I don’t really find any special existence of this punny term. The flavours are pretty decent, as I like that the ingredients like the sauteed mushrooms with truffle oil are held intact. There is also cheddar cheese here, which is just right in terms of ratio.

For coffee, I tried both the Flat White (S$5) and Black (S$4) which I opted for an Americano. The caffeine notes are punchy, yet easy to digest. It is not too bad if you are just lookign to have a good cup of brew in the Serangoon precinct.

Rants There is no parking in the building where Amber Ember is located. The best parking option for drivers is to park at the HDB parking of Blk 156 along Hougang Street 11. The cafe is a mere 3 minutes walk away. While less is more, I feel that the food options can be a little more extensive.

Will I Return Again? While the food options are not that exciting, the coffee is pretty decent if you just need to satisfy your caffeine fix. There is also a takeaway booth at the entrance where you can grab and go.
