If the high electricity rate in Singapore is getting you down, then you must follow the tips below to lower your power consumption. And if you think you need to do some major lifestyle change to bring your electricity bill down, think again. In fact, all you need to do is to change a habit or two.

Get a new air conditioner

An air conditioner is an essential appliance in Singapore. During summer, temperatures can reach 35 degrees on the island. The problem with air conditioners of course is that they can cause your power bill to spike. But not all air conditioners are created equal. And if you’re still using an old AC unit, then maybe it’s time for you to get a new one if you want to save on your electric bill. Make sure that the unit you’ll be getting has five ticks. That’s the sign of an energy-efficient appliance. You should also clean and maintain your AC unit regularly, especially the filters.

Use LED lights

If you’re still using incandescent or even fluorescent lights then you should consider switching to LED lights if you want to cut your power consumption. Some people prefer the warm glow that traditional incandescent bulbs emit but they are not as energy efficient as LED bulbs and they don’t last long either. LED bulbs actually consume up to 75% less energy than conventional bulbs. And they also last 25 times longer, which means you wouldn’t have to replace bulbs. So replacing all of the bulbs in your home with LED bulbs can help you save money in two ways. Getting LED bulbs is especially useful for households with night owls. Do this if you’re worrying about the high electricity rate in Singapore.

Set the temperature of water heater to low

Like an air conditioner, a water heater is one of those appliances that can make the lives of people in this city comfortable. But just like your AC, your water heater is also a potential power hog. But you can do something to lower the power consumption of your water heater and that is by simply setting the temperature to low. Setting the temperature of your water heater to high is one sure way to rack up your electric bill. You need to know that a typical water heater uses approximately 4,000 watts of electricity. So using your water heater often at high temperature will surely increase your electricity consumption.

Mind your refrigerator habits

Small things can mean a lot. And when it comes to saving electricity, changing your habits can go a long way. Reflect on how you use your refrigerator, for example. When you’re trying to get an item from your ref, do you spend a lot of time doing it or do you open the door, get the item, and then close the door immediately? Minimizing the time that your ref door is open is one good way to save electricity and save money. It’s also important that your ref is well-stocked all the time. If you don’t have enough food to fill then you can just fill it with water jugs or bottles.
